Greetings and salutations. Tis the boss with the Hot Sauce — and lo and behold, whether you realize it or not, May is just weeks away, with big happenings coming your way. Soon, it’s on to the opening of our 39th season at Memories in Margate. And with the coming of Memorial Day, look for a new live Geator Gold broadcast straight from the Jersey shore on Cruisin’ 92.1. We’ll keep you posted — but now, let’s ask the Geator.
We listen regularly on Saturday night and wish your show was longer. You mentioned a group from Harrisburg that you seemed to think was terrific, and you played a tune, “Just a Matter of Time.” Our research shows this song was charted by Brook Benton in February 1959. Can you tell us who the group was? — Denise L. Kurr, Camp Hill, Pa.
The group from Harrisburg is the Magnificent Men, one of the first white groups to achieve a genuine black soul sound. However, the song I played by them was not “It’s Just a Matter of Time,” which Brook Benton made famous, but the now classic “Peace of Mind.” It does contain a similar lyric (“I know it’s just a matter of time, I’m gonna find peace of mind”), but is a completely different song.
Jerry, do you watch the Academy Awards? What did you think of this year’s ceremony? — Florence N.
Unfortunately this year’s telecast, in my opinion, lacked the stardust that was always a part of the Oscars. The combination of Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, even though individually they are great talents, just didn’t make it happen. It seemed to me that they were doing more of a stand-up routine rather than hosting the biggest show business awards show of the year. And some of the acceptance speeches could have been more gracious. Summing it up, I felt the whole production left a lot to be desired.
I haven’t seen anything mentioned for a long time about the Malt Shop Memory Cruise in May. Can you give up an update? — Annie, Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Well, the cruise is nearly sold out. As a matter of fact, last week I had dinner with Frankie Avalon in the Big Apple and he told me that everyone is excited that we can spend some time with the fans. Of course along with Frankie and the Geat are Little Anthony, Lesley Gore, Lou Christie, Charlie Thomas and the Drifters, Lou Christie, Herb Reed’s Platters, and Bobby Rydell, plus some new doo-wop groups being added. There will be dance parties, and if you’d like to learn all of the dances that we do, we’ve got Geator Gold instructors on board to teach you the steps, along with exciting meet and greets, private parties with the stars, trivia games, plus if you’re a part of the Geator Gold group, an opportunity to win $500 in cruise chips. But remember, you must use the code word JERRY or mention the Geator when booking to be a part of all these extras. For updates, check out the maltshopcruise.com Web site.
Got a question for Jerry? Send it to AskTheGeator@acweekly.com or Geator Gold Radio, 626 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. For more info on Jerry’s appearances, go to www.geator.net — and keep on rocking, ’cause you only rock once!
After ranking the worst movies of the year in last week’s column, it is time for the more pleasant task of naming my favorite movies of 2010. It was a decent year for movies, not vintage, but solid, and here are my favorites in alphabetical order: The Ghost Writer Roman Polanski’s film is a quietly effective thriller devoted to the theme of political maneuvering during wartime. It delivers a message about men in power whose secret policies are carried out not just to protect innocent citizens, but also to keep the power-hungry politicians in power. The Girl Who Played with Fire The second in a trio in of films based on the globally popular and bestselling Millennium Trilogy novels by the late Swedish author Stieg Larsson, it is not as compelling as the first film...
