Plus Eliana Torres, the Jersey Rhythm Devils, Mental Projections and more.
ATLANTIC CITY — We all have our favorite Christmas carols, Halloween songs, and others that are popular during certain holidays, but what about Thanksgiving?
Well, soon Pleasantville’s own Leonard Dozier will fill that void, as he has penned a new song called "This Thanksgiving."
Dozier and his team are currently shooting a music video for the song, which will soon be made available. I’ll keep you posted in this column space.
Meanwhile, Dozier is hard at work campaigning for the role of Earvin “Magic” Johnson in the new Broadway play Magic Johnson/Larry Bird. You can visit Dozier’s web site to find out how we can all help him land on Broadway.
A ‘Boardwalk Empire’ State Of Mind
Who doesn’t like Boardwalk Empire, the HBO Show about 1920s Atlantic City? Well, there is a brand new band you should check out that plays their own versions of much of the music you’ll hear on the Emmy-winning show.
The band is called the Jersey Rhythm Devils and their music covers everything from Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway to the Old Crow Medicine Show (who I know about from the band's appearances on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion).
Check out their Facebook page and definitely give their music a good listen. And don’t forget to check out their Atlantic City Weekly Local Music Guide page here where you can listen to some of their recorded tunes.
Here is video of the Jersey Rhythm Devils playing at Caesars Atlantic City for the Boardwalk Empire Season 2 premiere party, Sunday, Sept. 25:
Hot Like Fire
Eliana Torres is currently burning up YouTube with her new single “Inferno,” produced by James Stokes. If you haven’t heard it, think a young and talented Jennifer Lopez. The track has the swagger of vintage Latin music and hip hop fused into an unique presentation that is 100 percent Eliana. Every time I play it on my computer I have to remind myself that it’s not a disco tune, and I’m not out on a Saturday night.
The Heart of an Artist
Please join David. T Harris, Elle Vintage, Wild Orchid and Cheryl Sellers for the opening night of Mental Projections at Redding’s Southern Cuisine in Atlantic City. For the opening week the stage features Askia Abdusaalam, Uhleesa Raymond, and the band Christian Tizon. Each week will feature poets, writers and musicians at Redding’s. The stage is open to all who wish to perform. Admission is $5 all night.
Funny Books
Though it’s not a musical event, I want to invite one and all to the Greater Atlantic City Comic Con Sunday and Monday, Oct. 9-10, at the Shore Mall. The Con! has free parking and a number of guests who are industry professionals scheduled to come and sign autographs, discuss their work, and even do some custom stuff (for a fee).
Professional guests include Robert Petrecca (Justice League Unlimited Comic Book), N Steven Harris (Bat Man Officer Down), Ben Fogletto (Degrees of Fear), Bernard Collins (Beyond The Back Of The Bus), Joe Del Beotto (G.I Joe, M.A.S.K) and Tony DiGerolamo (The Simpsons comics).
You can also meet the creators and artists and ask them questions one on one and also take part in Q & A sessions at the main stage in front of Boscov’s in the Mall. You can also relax and check out cartoons and comic/sci-fi related programs in the screening room, and see screenings of Dick Tracey, Dungeons and Dragons and Underdog. There are panels, coloring and art stations, a press area and more. There’s a special presentation to the Greater Atlantic City Comic Con! guest of honor David Vonner. Vonner is a Pleasantville native who is a toy designer for Marvel’s Hasbro Line.
Once again it's time for one of my summer reading lists. Unfortunately, my schedule this summer has been busy, so my list is short. 'Justice' for AllI believe in comic books as a great way to get yo...

Like Bart Simpson, who dreamed of working at Mad magazine, and every other boy I knew in grade school, I wanted to be a comic book artist. My fantasy of getting paid to write and draw comics and havi...
Before the creation of videotapes and the Internet, I would often watch and study the closing credits of the TV show Good Times. Or, rather, I would look behind the words and study the artwork of Ern...
ATLANTIC CITY — Summer in New York may mean “Rucker Basketball” — a name derived from Rucker Park, N.Y., where many future NBA stars honed their skills on the blacktop. Here in Atlantic City, organizers of the “Just Cause Celebrity Basketball Game” hope that their celebrity hoops game will become an annual “Fall Classic.” The game (which will include Atlantic City Councilman Frank Gilliam) is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Atlantic City High School gym. The organizers are planning a kiddie camp with several NBA and former NBA players Saturday at 11am, and the game will start around 2pm. Organizers say the goal of the game is to bring activism and community together in Atlantic...
ATLANTIC CITY — As we near the end of another great summer, there are still some cool concerts and musical events left this season. I am looking forward to YouTube/a cappella sensation Straight No Chaser. If the group’s non-holiday catalogue is as fun as the songs that have become Christmas/Chanukah classics on my laptop, then I am sure the concert will be fun. In fact, several readers have already endorsed Straight No Chaser, performing at Harrah’s Concert Venue through Sept. 4. Another big deal for me is Donnie Osmond coming to the Borgata on Saturday, Aug. 27. I would pay twice the admission to hear Osmond discuss candidly the music business and the changes since he and his brothers first took to the stage in the 1970s. As we say in my circle, Donny Osmond “has seen a lot of...
