Still Some Summer Left

This summer has not been one of my favorites. First M.J. and a host of other icons pass away, and there were no real superstars in town like Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder or Beyonce.

This past weekend, however, I did catch Full Force and the Force MDs at Gardner’s Basin for an old-school show. Sunday’s show drew hundreds of people to the open-air stage. Full Force took us back to late ’80s and early ’90s with their hits “Alice” and “Temporary Love Thing.”

The part of the show I enjoyed most was when they performed the hits they recorded with Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam. Lisa Lisa was not there, but Bow-Legged Lou introduced a new talent who has a voice that would have to be heard to be believed named Kylee Claxton. The 23-year-old Claxton made Lisa Lisa’s “All Cried Out” her own as she performed with Full Force. Lou, or whoever discovered Claxton, should be signing talent for record labels today. Claxton was amazing and refreshing.

The Force MDs also did a great show, performing hits such as “Tears” and “Love Is a House.” The highlight of the show came when the Force MDs did some spot-on impersonations — it was their ability to mimic that made me notice them on their first hit song “Inching for a Scratch” from the movie Breaking. Full Force also came out and did some comedy and music with the Force MDs.

Fanning the Fire

After Labor Day the heat will stay with us. Here’s what’s on my hot list for the next days.

Thurs., Sept. 3 — Singer-songwriter and one of my favorite artists, Gina Roché, is at the Beach Creek Oyster Bar & Grill in Wildwood starting at 6pm.

Fri., Sept. 4 and Sun., Sept. 6 — The Roots and DJ Jazzy Jeff are at the Borgata. All you need to know is that the Roots, who will appear at the Music Box, are the best band of the century, and that Jeff, who will be spinning Sunday, is the best DJ of the last century. If you have no feet at all, you will not be excused from dancing at these shows.

Sun., Sept. 6 — Booze Cruise. The name says it all. What could be safer than drinking alcohol on the open seas during hurricane season? Seriously, though, boat parties are as much a part of summer as linen shorts and white shoes. This party will start about 10pm. The boat leaves Gardner’s Basin at midnight. Tickets are $20. Call 892-1785.

Sun., Sept. 6 — The Pool at Harrah’s. Naughty By Nature is performing, and their song “O.P.P.” still rocks a party.

Tues., Sept. 8 — Industry Night Tuesdays at Dusk. Why Tuesdays? Well, the tourists and amateurs party on Friday and Saturday nights.

Enjoy the rest of the summer!
