After
 the heat and sun of summer, southern New Jersey relaxes with some cooler weather, less crowded beaches and roads (and hopefully less rain) and a local flavor during the fall. Here’s a look at some events and activities to help you enjoy the shore’s second season. (For upcoming casino concerts click here)


 

Friday, Oct. 7 to Oct. 10


39th Annual 
Victorian Weekend

Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities and various locations, Cape May. Weekend of unique tours and events. capemaymac.org.


Saturday, Oct. 8


Smithville Irish Festival


Historic Smithville and Village Greene. The Festival will feature an Irish Market offering a variety of wares plus live music in two locations and a friendly Dance Feis. Music groups include James & The Quiet Man, The Barley Boys, Bogside Rogues and Amadaun. Free. 11am-6pm. smithvillenj.com.


Sea Isle City Columbus Day Parade and Italian Festival 


The 21st Annual Columbus Day Parade, begins at 2pm near the Sea Isle City Italian American Club (adjacent to the causeway bridge on JFK Boulevard), will run east along JFK Boulevard before turning south on Landis Avenue and ending at 63rd Street, where this year’s Italian Festival will already be underway. The festival runs 10am-dusk. 263-6341.


Friday, Oct. 14


Bay-Atlantic Symphony – Richard Alston

Dante Hall Theater of the Arts, 14 N. Mississippi Ave., Atlantic City. Renowned pianist Richard Alston will present a free concert of music by composers of African descent, as part of the Atlantic City Music Festival, presented by the Bay-Atlantic Symphony. 7pm. bayatlanticsymphony.org. 


Friday, Oct. 14 to Oct. 16


Atlantic City Cinefest

The festival will screen a selection of features, shorts and documentaries, as well as honor cinematic success stories, such as Scott Rosenfelt, who will receive the Lifesaver Award Saturday night at the Screening Room at Resorts Casino Hotel, home to the bulk of the festival films. downbeachfilmfestival.org.

Smithville Italian Festival

Historic Smithville and Village Greene. 10am-5pm. Visit smithvillenj.com.


Saturday, Oct. 15 to Oct. 16.


Resorts Casino Oktoberfest Featuring The Jimmy Sturr Orchestra

Resorts, Atlantic City. Open to the public, Oktoberfest features free admission and a variety of vendors, authentic German beer and food in addition to a full schedule of entertainment, including German Bavarian dancers with exciting performances straight from the Bavarian Mountains in traditional native costumes. Saturday, Oct. 15


20th Annual Pumpkin Festival - Historic Cold Spring Village

HCSV, 720 Rt. 9, Cape May. This popular annual event offers family fun, pumpkin painting, a Halloween parade at noon, games, food and craft vendors, a haunted barn, hayride through the Village farm and much more. Free. 10am-4:30pm. Hcsv.org.


Saturday, Oct. 15 to Oct. 16


New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge

Eleven historic lighthouses, two life-saving stations and two museums are all taking place in this annual event that “challenges” you to visit as many of the states historic beacons as you can over one weekend. Lighthousechallenge.org. 


Sunday, Oct. 16


Atlantic City Marathon

Boardwalk at Bally’s, Atlantic City. The marathon returns for its 53rd year and features the Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10 K and 5 K , non-competitive Health Walk and Kid’s Fun Run. 8am. Free to spectators. Acmarathon.org


Monday, Oct. 17


Whelan-Polistina Debate

Circus Maximus Theater, Caesars Atlantic City. Democrat Jim Whelan and Republican Vince Polistina, both vying for State Senate seats this election, will face off in a hospitality-themed debate. Local hospitality leaders will pose the debate questions, which will cover significant issues in the hospitality/tourism industry. $40. 5:30pm reception. Debate 6:30pm. achotellodging,com

Fall ’11 Movie Season

After last week’s (Sept 1, 2011 issue) preview of some exciting movies on tap at the Toronto International Film Festival, here are the ten films from the Hollywood dream factory that I’m most looking forward to seeing, topped by the American version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Fall Guide 2010

Fall in southern New Jersey is a time for festivals, Boardwalk shows, the Atlantic City Marathon and Halloween treats. And that’s not even mentioning headliners such as Phish and Justin Beiber performing at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall. � WHILE I'M OFF IN Toronto checking out what Oscar-hunting American movie companies and the international filmmakers have in store for us, here is a look at some of the films scheduled for release through the holiday season. This week's column will look at movies in September and October. Next week we'll explore the cinema options for November and December. Among the films on tap are Jamie Fox as Ray Charles, and a political swipe at the Bush family by John Sayles. The extremely busy Jude Law has six films in the can, including Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and Alfie. September The Forgotten -- Joseph Ruben (The Stepfather) directs Julianne Moore, Dominic West, Gary Sinise, Alfre Woodard and Anthony Edwards in this psychological thriller about a woman searching for her missing son. However, he may not exist. Sept. 24 Head in the Clouds -- A romantic epic set in Europe during World War II starring off-screen lovers Charlize Theron and Stuart Townsend as on-screen lovers, with Penelope Cruz as a sexy dancer and roommate in Paris. Sept. 17 Mr. 3000 -- Bernie Mac in his first leading man role, a retired baseball player who "unretires" when three of his hits are disqualified....
