Chris Montez
Once again, greetings and salutations. And for you folks who joined us last Sunday for our Mother’s Day spectacular at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, what can I say? Outstanding. Another sold-out show, with thanks going out to Jay Black, Frankie Avalon, the Soul Survivors, the Orlons, the Tymes, and the Planotones. And with that behind us, let’s talk about Memorial Day weekend, right around the corner. Would you believe this year will mark 40 years that you and I have been together at that legendary spot, Memories in Margate? Look for some exciting things to happen when we go live on KOOL 98.3 on weekends, not only from Memories on Saturday nights, but also on Friday nights from Mia’s Restaurant at Caesars Atlantic City. More about that as the weeks go by — now, let’s ask the Geator.
After a bunch of people (including me) were reminiscing about the good ol’ ’80s in Margate, I was wondering if you ever considered doing an ’80s reunion dance party at Memories? — Lovin Downbeach (Connie)
Well, if you’ve been to Memories on Saturday, it’s always an ’80s reunion. It’s the partying crowd, and it’s all about the music. We can go from the ’60s, the ’70s, and the ’80s into the present. And the magic of Memories is the people who come and party. No matter what age or era you favor, Memories will take you back.
Listening to you play “Call Me” and was wondering if Chris Montez is still on the music scene. — Laura
Many performers who seem to have disappeared from view are quite popular in other countries, and Chris is one. He has had much success touring in Japan, South America, and Europe and also continues to appear in the United States. As a matter of fact, he was with us at Caesars in Atlantic City when we taped the Malt Shop Memories show with Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell, Fabian, and other greats. That show will be aired nationally on PBS in August. You can also check Chris’s schedule on his own Web site at chrismontez.com.
What’s the inside word on who Carly Simon was singing about in the song “You’re So Vain”? I always thought it was Warren Beatty. Thanks, man, keep rockin’! — Roy Campbell via Facebook
Carly has admitted that the song is “only a little bit” about Warren Beatty, but she has never publicly revealed exactly who the song is about and claims she never will because “it wouldn’t be fair” to the person. The only hints she’s given are that the person’s name has the letters A, E and R in it. So the truth is finally out — it’s about the Geator!
Got a question for Jerry? Send it to AskTheGeator@acweekly.com or Geator Gold Radio, 626 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. For more info on Jerry’s appearances, go to www.geator.net — and keep on rocking, ’cause you only rock once!
Once again, greetings and salutations. Before getting to your questions, I want to thank the folks at Caesars, including boss man Don Marrandino, and Georges Perrier and Chris Scarduzio, who together run Mia Restaurant at Caesars, for the wonderful hospitality bestowed upon all of us who taped the Time-Life Malt Shop Memories show for PBS recently. Chris and Georges took time out to cook for every one of the stars of the show (held earlier this month at Caesars’ Circus Maximus Theater), including Frankie Avalon, Chris Montez, Bobby Rydell, and all the groups. We’ll let you know when it will be televised, and you can check geator.net for updates....
ONCE AGAIN, greetings and salutations. Hard to believe — tomorrow is April 1 and the opening of baseball season. The Geator’s prediction? The Phillies are going all the way. Also going all the way are the tickets for our Kimmel Center show May 8, Mother’s Day. I guess because everybody wants to give the gift of love to their moms, they’re giving that along with the gift of music. Hope to see you there. Now let’s ask the Geator. I read here in the Weekly that Kenny Vance and Jay Black are on the bill at your next show at the Kimmel Center. Will you have them perform together like they did when they were with Jay & the Americans? — Gil D. Absolutely....
Paul Simon, who years ago vowed never to perform in an Atlantic City casino, has apparently had a change of heart. The enigmatic pop singer and songwriter will make his Atlantic City solo debut with a May 28 one-night-stand ...
Once again, greetings and salutations, and a very happy St. Paddy’s Day to all. Hard to believe that Memorial Day weekend is only 10 weeks away, and with it, the opening of our 40th year at Memories in Margate and partying down at the Jersey shore. Meanwhile, back in Philly we’re getting things together for our special Mother’s Day show at the Kimmel Center on May 8, “A Gift of Music,” with special guest stars Frankie Avalon, Jay Black, the Tymes, the Orlons, the Soul Survivors, and Kenny Vance & the Planotones. More about that next week — but now, it’s time to ask the Geator. We saw you in the PBS documentary on rock DJs, Airplay: The Rise and Fall of Rock Radio. Do you think that with the variety of programming available on satellite radio, those great days of creativity on the air will...
The technological gadgets of today simply weren’t around when Vance was a young Jewish kid from Brooklyn, a music lover who would become a founding member of Jay & The Americans in the early 1960s. It was an era in music when things like pop charts, 45s and live radio DJs were still relevant and made a huge impact on mainstream culture.
