Once again, greetings and salutations. It’s that time, Memorial Day weekend, and traditionally for many the opening of the summer season. No different for the Geator guys and gals — Memories in Margate opens up for our 40th year. And this season, something different: Memories will be open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Thursdays it’s DJ Perry Angelozzi with special drink prices. Every Friday night, a “Back in the Day” dance party with Joey Marini, and the Geator live on KOOL 98.3 from Mia’s at Caesars in Atlantic City starting at 9pm.
Saturday night, of course, the Geator live at Memories on KOOL 98.3. Sunday afternoons, it’s “Off the Beach” with Perry Angelozzi at Memories and the Geator jam sessions at La Costa in Sea Isle City starting at 4pm. So now that you know what’s happening, it’s time for your questions.
Geator, is it true that there is such a demand for your book that they are going to release it earlier than August? — Art R.
Apparently so, because Running Press has now moved up the release date from Aug. 23 to Aug. 2. Meanwhile you can order the book at a pre-publication discount from many outlets, including amazon.com and Barnes and Noble. The title tells it all: You Only Rock Once.
I heard that there is going to be a movie about Sam Cooke. Do you know anything about it? — C.L.
Yes, there is a finished script that has the approval of the Cooke estate, which is usually the biggest hurdle when making a film biography. They are now searching for a director. Other biopics in the works — Michael Douglas will star opposite Matt Damon in Liberace, directed by Steven Soderbergh, who directed Matt in the last three Oceans movies, and Steven Spielberg is directing Lincoln, about Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Sally Field.
Your Mother’s Day show [at the Kimmel Center] was great on May 8! Jay Black was as good as ever! When I go to iTunes, the versions of “Cara Mia” sound studio canned and softer. At the Kimmel Center the sound and style was much better. You could really hear the brass. Is there a live version of Jay singing “Cara Mia” you could recommend that would be close to his May 8 performance? Thank you! — Dave Reed
To my knowledge there is nothing out there on recording that would come close to how Jay sounds in a live concert hall with a 22-piece orchestra. But I do understand that the PBS show we did last year in Pittsburgh, Rock, Pop, and Doo Wop, might have his live performance of “Cara Mia” on the DVD. You could check with your local PBS station or with WQED in Pittsburgh.
