Once again, greetings and salutations. And here it comes, another bombastic Fourth of July celebration, not only for Uncle Sam but for yours truly, the Geator. I don’t know if Mama Geator planned it, but I come right before our Uncle, and what a party we’ll throw to lead into that famous gent. We’re going to celebrate Tuesday, my actual birthday, July 3, at Memories in Margate and segue right into the Fourth. Old friends, new friends, and fans will be giving a cheer to the Geator and Sam for our new year. And don’t eat – doors will open at 8 and you’ll have food like you’ve never tasted before — Tony Luke’s, Joey Vento’s Geno’s Steaks, Modo Mio, the Aramingo Diner, Rita’s Water Ice, Barrels, Chickie’s & Pete’s, and Primo Hoagies. And of course many surprise guests will come and share the Fourth with us. Mark it down: Tuesday, July 3 at Memories in Margate, and Wednesday, July 4, at the SugarHouse Casino from 5-7pm.
And if you were listening to our live broadcast on Kool 98.3 this past weekend, it was a blast. Nothing but stars. Sean celebrated, Freddie celebrated, along with Mark, Adrian, Bernadette, and crew. And yes, John and Lauren, Anthony, Justin and his lady, the ever popular Jeff Orleans with a new squeeze, dancing along with Fred & Irene Shabel. The list of stars goes on every weekend. Even Mark Maggi celebrated his birthday with the Geator as did our favorite DJ, Joel Stephens. And our Sunday jam sessions are in full swing at La Costa in Sea Isle starting at 4, and as you read this column we officially are back at Lighthouse Pointe in Wildwood every Thursday. See you tonight – now, let’s ask the Geator.
On your show today(6/12) you said that Frankie Lymon & Paul Anka were always fighting. Why? — Liz A., Galloway Township
There was always competitiveness between them, partly from being two of the youngest kids to appear on Alan Freed’s show. On tour, they both were practical jokers. Also, Frankie recorded a great cover of “Diana,” which got a lot of play in New York, but Paul had the national hit, and Frankie was always playing tricks on him to get even.
Jerry, any tapes left from the TV 29 It’s Here days? We had a blast back then. — Martin Morley, Southampton, Pa.
Unfortunately, those shows, like the Discophonic Scene shows that we did on CBS, were taped and erased. To my knowledge none of them were ever saved.
Here is a blast from the past. Do you recall Cabana Steak Shop? Great pizza steak! We also got great hoagies at Red’s Hoagies at 9th and Mifflin across from Bok. Ah! They were the days. Gone but not forgotten. Last but not least we saw Lee Andrews and the Hearts at the Passyunk Drive. Great harmony. — Gaten Maffei, Detective Retired P.P.D., Warminster, Pa.
Those were great days when you had great spots like that, and in my book, You Only Rock Once, I relive those great memories that you just spoke about. The book is available locally at Hoy’s Five and Ten in Ocean City, Avalon, and Stone Harbor. Great reading when you’re on the beach. By the way, Lee Andrews’ son, Questlove, is carrying on the great tradition of his dad with his own band, the Roots.
Got a question for Jerry? Send it to AskTheGeator@acweekly.com or Geator Gold Radio, 626 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. For more info on Jerry’s appearances, go to www.geator.net — and keep on rocking, ’cause you only rock once!
Once again, greetings and salutations. As we approach July 4, Memories is still zooming, and last weekend was no exception. Nothing but stars, with the honorable Carl Poplar popping on by and Geno Barbera, brother of the now famous Gary Barbera, celebrating his birthday with the Geno-ettes. And yes, that was our favorite ticket master, Eddie Sherman, from Glassman Ticket Agency, signing autographs for the ladies from South Philadelphia. Maria was there with her whole family, as was Anthony. Justin was elsewhere with his lady, but brother Sean was boogying on the dance floor with Magdalena and the girls from Longport. Also on the dance floor, dancing to “Lazy Mary,” my old pal Willie Jacovini and his lovely lady. And...
ONCE AGAIN, GREETINGS AND salutations. Had the privilege of attending HBO's New York premiere of The Life and Death of Peter Sellers last Friday with my pal Freddy DeMann, who produced it. The movie is a revelation, for it's a side of Peter Sellers that moviegoers never saw, and Geoffrey Rush's performance is remarkable. And yep, that was us in the Thanksgiving Day Parade, in the float -- you saw it on Channel 6. There he was, the man who's turned the Sands into one of the hottest spots in A.C., George Toth, and there I was, and there were the Trammps -- what a way to kick off the holiday season. And as you know, every Thursday we repeat as we go "live at 5" from the Swingers Lounge at the Sands. Don't forget our gala Christmas party coming up on December 18 at Memories in Margate -- more about that below. But now, on to your questions. Amazons & coyotes -- what does that mean? -- Robert Pierce Dear Robert, "Amazons and coyotes" is a term I used on my radio show describing the girls and guys from the different neighborhoods. There were the jives, the conservatives, and the...
Once again, greetings and salutations. Before we get to your questions, let me thank each and every one of you who were with us for our 24th show at the Kimmel, our “Swinging Doo-Wop Reunion.” It was beyond my expectations, and people are still raving about it. Thanks to all of you who came and supported the wonderful groups. Make plans to get your tickets in advance for our 25th show on Jan. 26, 2013 — more details about that to come. And let me give you a heads-up about “Sensational ’60s Weekend” coming your way April 27-28 in Wildwood. I’ll kick it off on Friday night at the Convention Center, and some of the great artists who will be performing live that weekend are Neil Sedaka and Lesley...
As we go to press, I am in California attending the private memorial for my dear friend Dick Clark, who wrote the introduction to my book ...
Once again, greetings and salutations. And after 40 years, Memories in Margate at Amherst & Madison Avenue is still the No. 1 dance club in South Jersey, attracting people from all over the country. The real magic has always been you, the people who come, meet, dance, and have fun. Since 1972 it’s been the same. And as you know, we do it live on WTKU KOOL 98.3 every Friday and Saturday night. Friday we go live at 8pm with a complimentary food buffet by Chickie’s & Pete’s of EHT and Barrels of Margate. And Saturday? Nothing but stars. This weekend we welcome my pal Frankie Valli, who’s in town at the Borgata. Frankie has always been a part of the magic at Memories. See you there this weekend — now, let’s ask the Geator. You have been playing a beautiful song called “These Golden Rings,” but the version I heard on your show is...
