Once again, greetings and salutations. As we approach July 4, Memories is still zooming, and last weekend was no exception. Nothing but stars, with the honorable Carl Poplar popping on by and Geno Barbera, brother of the now famous Gary Barbera, celebrating his birthday with the Geno-ettes.

And yes, that was our favorite ticket master, Eddie Sherman, from Glassman Ticket Agency, signing autographs for the ladies from South Philadelphia. Maria was there with her whole family, as was Anthony. Justin was elsewhere with his lady, but brother Sean was boogying on the dance floor with Magdalena and the girls from Longport.

Also on the dance floor, dancing to “Lazy Mary,” my old pal Willie Jacovini and his lovely lady. And if you noticed the limos outside, those were the guys and gals who came in from New York to party with the Geator. And the big news for next week is Fred de Felice will be celebrating his birthday at Memories.

Before we get to your questions, let me remind you: this Friday night (June 22) after 11 pm, it’s “Midnight Madness” at Memories in Margate — reduced drink prices, specials, food buffet, relaxed dress code, and no cover. Now, let’s ask the Geator.

Jerry, what night will you celebrate your birthday at Memories? — Eileen Blessington, Prendi-St. Joe’s, Clifton Heights, Pa.

When is your first week at Lighthouse Pointe in Wildwood? — Debbie Coolbreeze
(via e-mail)

Well, as you know, the Geator always celebrates his birthday with Uncle Sam. Mine is July 3 and Sam is Wednesday, July 4, a national holiday, so we’ll celebrate at Memories on my actual birthday, Tuesday, July 3, with lots of food from some of our favorite Philly and shore spots: Geno’s Steaks, Tony Luke’s, Modo Mio, Chickie’s & Pete’s, Primo Hoagies, Barrels, Rita’s Water Ice, and, of course, the famous Aramingo Diner cheesecakes. And to kick off the holiday, we’ll be with you next Thursday, June 28, at the Lighthouse Pointe in Wildwood, and every Thursday for the rest of the summer season.

Just finished You Only Rock Once. Great book! I really feel I know you better now. What contact(s) did you ever have with Elvis Presley? What were your impressions of Elvis? Please reply before I die of curiosity. — Neal Bracken, Lansdale, Pa.

Actually it’s in the book. I met Elvis once, when I went to visit my friend Fats Domino, who was appearing at the Flamingo in the 1970s. We were back in his dressing room when Elvis, unannounced, knocked at the door, walked in, and greeted Fats, who said, “I want you to meet my friend, the Geator.” Elvis said, “It’s a pleasure, Mr. Geator.” My response was “Elvis, you don’t have to call me ‘Mister,’ it’s just the Geator.” He replied by saying that he called everyone he meets for the first time “Mister.” He stayed in the room, talked with Fats a little bit, and left. A very respectful man who impressed me as a true fan of the music.

Geator, do you know anything about a movie being made of Phil Spector’s life? — Anita Peller, Longport

The movie was just completed last month and will be shown on HBO next year. It’s not really a biography; it’s more about the murder trial, with Al Pacino playing Phil and Helen Mirren playing his lawyer. Rumor has it that they used Phil’s actual wig in the movie.

It isn’t uncommon to see a line forming well before doors open at Memories in Margate — the Amherst Avenue nightclub Jerry “The Geator with the Heater” Blavat has owned since 1972 — during weekend nights in the summer.
