'A.C.' Last for Lancaster?

Once again, greetings and salutations. Crowds galore as they head on down to the Jersey shore, and Memories is in full swing. It's "Thursday Night Live" with DJ Chris Sounds, then Friday and Saturday live on KOOL 98.3 from 9pm to 2am. On Sunday afternoons, come join me at La Costa in Sea Isle City starting at 4pm. Now, time for your questions.

Hello from sunny southern California! Heard "Ask the Lonely" by the Four Tops on your show today, one of my favorite songs. Who sang backup to Levi Stubbs on this song? -- Steve & Evangeline Miller, La Mesa, Calif.

That's legendary girl group the Andantes -- Louvain Demps, Marlene Barrow and Jackie Hicks -- who backed up every major Motown artist, including Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, Mary Wells on "My Guy," Marvin Gaye on "Heard It Through the Grapevine" and "What's Going On," the Four Tops on all their tracks produced by Holland-Dozier-Holland, plus Jackie Wilson, Sinatra, and even other girl groups like the Supremes, the Marvelettes, and Martha & the Vandellas.

Burt Lancaster -- I love the work he did, but never heard that he was ever married or involved long term or had children. Also, was Field of Dreams or Atlantic City his last movie? -- Eileen B.

Burt was married three times, all to non-celebrities, and had three daughters and two sons. One of his sons was screenwriter Bill Lancaster, who wrote the screenplay for Bad News Bears and was married to the daughter of Ernie Kovacs. Burt's last major U.S. movie was Field of Dreams, released in 1989, nine years after Atlantic City.

For a number of years you played a song called "Looking for an Echo." Can you tell me who did that song and where I can purchase a copy? -- Joseph Fiandra

The version by Kenny Vance & the Planotones was used in the movie Looking for an Echo, starring Armand Assante, and is on the soundtrack CD, which you can get on the Planotones Web site. There also was an earlier version by the Persuasions, and it's on their album Chirpin'.

The technological gadgets of today simply weren’t around when Vance was a young Jewish kid from Brooklyn, a music lover who would become a founding member of Jay & The Americans in the early 1960s. It was an era in music when things like pop charts, 45s and live radio DJs were still relevant and made a huge impact on mainstream culture.
