What's That?

Find out here.

Harrah's Showboat Casino will have blues in the night, blues in the afternoon and blues on the beach and Boardwalk starting July 4th weekend. Last week, House of Blues board member Dan Aykroyd, joined by Harrah's executives and city and state officials, announced plans to turn a major section of the Showboat into a House of Blues nightclub, restaurant and music hall. This marriage of the Mardi Gras casino and HOB will include a House of Blues Casino and poker room, a beach bar, lounge, and a private membership club. It will be the largest House of Blues in the nation. "The House of Blues is the coolest brand in America and to marry it with Harrah's Showboat Mardi Gras theme is perfect because House of Blues is based on Louisiana's southern cooking and culture," said Aykroyd. The Blues Brother added that the HOB presents diverse music, not just blues, R&B and rock, but gospel, disco, Latin, rap and hip-hop. "The goal is not to be just a regional market for South Jersey, metropolitan New York and Philadelphia. We want to make Atlantic City a world destination."

CEO of Harrah's Entertainment, Inc., Tim Wilmott, announced that the poker room will host World Series of Poker events and that the music hall will present 200 shows a year. "[This project] will get rid of that warehouse look on the Boardwalk and create a whole new faade," said Wilmott, "to entice people to come down to this end of the Boardwalk. Atlantic City will be a resort destination taking care of customers in terms of days, and not hours." Senator Bill Gormley noted that a year ago the explosion of gambling across the country rocked the city. "The line that summed it up was when Elwood turns to Jake and says, 'It's a hundred and six miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, a half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.' It was dark and we were wearing sunglasses and the great potential of this city could have been lost. I want to thank Acting Governor Richard Codey for taking off the sunglasses, putting politics aside and realizing that a vital Atlantic City is good for everybody."

Lover Man

A dapper Julio Iglesias made his Harrah's debut last weekend with two shows at the casino's aptly named Concert Venue. Fans can expect a new English-language album from the Latin lover soon. Mr. Iglesias told us he's expecting to start working on it next month after he completes an album intended for French audiences. After more than 35 years in the music biz, he's still got the whole world -- including all of the ladies -- in his hands.

Two More Wild & Crazy Guy

If you like your acoustic guitar-driven music with a lot of humor, you'll dig Stephen Lynch, who'll be co-headlining a night of comedy at the Borgata's Event Center this Saturday night (Jan. 15) with stand-up vet Mitch Hedberg. Both familiar faces on Comedy Central, the two hipster funnymen are currently on a joint national tour, playing theaters usually reserved for rock bands.

With CDs such as Superhero and A Little Bit Special under his belt -- as well as a new live DVD -- Lynch has been described as a "singer/comedian," performing his often twisted tales dressed in catchy melodies. Think Adam Sandler singing about the Special Olympics instead of Hanukkah.

Not much can be said about observational comic Hedberg aside from the fact that he's one funny dude. Here's a favorite quote from one of his live bits: "I have a cheese-shredder at home, which is its positive name. They don't call it by its negative name, which is sponge ruiner."
