Shemekia Copeland

‘33 1/3’ (Telarc)

Blues shouter/guitar slinger Shemekia Copeland may only be a few years over 30, but the Harlem-born Queen of the Blues (officially crowned at the 2011 Chicago Blues festival) has deep musical roots. Her father, the Texas guitarist Johnny Copeland inspired her song “Daddy Sings the Blues,” and the former up-and-comer has performed with blues icons such as James Cotton, the late Hubert Sumlin, B.B King and Ruth Brown. Meanwhile Robert Plant has called her “the next Tina Turner” and Carlos Santana has called her a “diamond.” Copeland’s new new tunes mix gritty electric guitar playing with smooth production on songs such as the tearful “Ain’t Gonna Be Your Tattoo,” the timely “Lemon Pie,” the modern gospel-blues of “Somebody Else’s Jesus,” the straight-shooting “A Woman” and a slowed down, beautifully sung cover of Bob Dylan’s “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight.” — Jeff Schwachter
