ATLANTIC CITY — For the 21st year, the Big Shot Volleyball Championships, presented by 4C Totally Light 2Go, will be coming to the beaches of Atlantic City. This year’s tournament — which matches some of the nation’s top male and female doubles teams — is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 6-7, on the beach in front of Bally’s. There will be $8,000 in cash prizes courtesy of Bally’s, East End Volleyball and Great American Volleyball. Tournament preliminaries start 9am Saturday followed by the playoff rounds at 11am Sunday. Admission is free for all spectators. A number of nationally known volleyball players are expected to be spiking, setting and diving all over A.C.’s beaches come tournament time. The top-two male teams on the East Coast — Mike DiPierro/Adam Roberts and Steve Grotowski/Adrian Carambula — are registered for the event, while top females competitors include Tara Kuk/Olaya Pazo and Kristen Batt/Brooke Sweat. On Saturday, Sammy’s Beach Bar at Bally’s will be holding a special meet-and-greet with the players from 7-9pm, which will allow fans to interact with the athletes. For more information about the tournament, visit eevb.net or contact East End Volleyball at 631-728-0397.

RNS ‘In The Pink!’ 50th Anniversary Celebration
For five decades, the Ruth Newman Shapiro (RNS) Cancer & Heart Fund has helped save the lives of countless individuals throughout southern New Jersey, and is one of the area’s longest running and most successful non-profit, volunteer-driven fundraising organizations. RNS has generated over $12 million for new facilities, programs, services and equipment for several area hospitals since its creation in 1961 by Rose Newman in honor of her mother, who lost her battle with cancer. As tribute to its past and continued success, a ceremony honoring five of the original 13 volunteers who helped get the organization started will take place at the Linwood Country Club (500 Shore Rd. in Linwood) on Thursday, Aug. 11, at 11:30am. The “In The Pink!” 50th anniversary luncheon will honor Annette “Lucky” Rockower, Esther Gushner, Doritt Linsk, Carolyn Major and Bea Klein Newborn. The guest speaker will be Linda Bradbury (pictured), senior vice president of Lilly Pulitzer, a leading retailer of resort chic apparel. Tickets are $60 per person and include a tour of the RNS Show House — a 7,000-square-foot Palladian-style landmark residence in Ventnor that dates back to 1908. Proceeds from the event benefit the RNS Regional Cancer Center and Heart Institute at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, and other area pulmonary and oncology facilities. Dominick Farinacci
‘Dawn of Goodbye’
Don’t press that eject button after the ninth and seemingly last track on trumpeter Dominick Farinacci’s latest album, the terrific Dawn of Goodbye. That way you won’t miss the acclaimed Cleveland-native’s version of the classic Nat Adderly tune “Work Song,” which is a bonus track and serves as a bluesy bookend to this traditional jazz album. Combined with the rest of the album’s covers — and a couple originals — the song illustrates Farinacci’s deep knowledge, skill and natural understanding of the jazz medium. Having played with greats such as Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Barron and Joe Lovano, Farinacci, who performs for free on the Atlantic City Boardwalk at Kennedy Plaza Aug. 4 (7pm), is well on his way to his own greatness. Actually, he may already be there. — Jeff Schwachter
