The Borgata kicked off its eighth annual Winter Poker Open tournament series, which is part of the World Poker Tour and has proven to be the casino’s second most popular event behind the Borgata Open in September. The Open broke a standing Borgata record with its opening $1 Millon Guaranteed $560 Big Stack No Limit Hold’em event last week, which saw the largest turnout in the history of East Coast poker. A record-breaking 3,871 participants entered into the first event, generating $1,935,500 in prize money. The tournament brings in a nice blend of both amateur players as well as regional and local professionals. The 18-day series, which began Jan. 15 in the Event Center, features 56 unique tournaments including No Limit Hold’em, Mix-Max, Six-Max, Deep Stack, Seniors and Ladies No Limit Hold’em, mixed games, Seven Card Stud and Omaha events. The series culminates with the guaranteed $2 million WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open Championship event that runs through Feb. 1. Last year, Joshua Mancuso took home the Borgata Winter Poker Open Championship event, joining Vadim Shlez (2011), Jeffrey Madsen (2010), Steven Weinstein (2009), Gavin Griffin (2008), John Hennigan (2007) and Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi (2006) on the distinguished list of Borgata Winter Poker Open champions. To view the event schedule or for more information visit theborgata.com and follow all of the action on the Borgata Poker Blog and on Twitter @BorgataPoker. As a side note, Virginia resident Aubrey Hart hit for $250,000 playing slots at the Borgata on Tuesday, Jan. 22, which came just three weeks after a Maryland man netted a $3.8 millon slot jackpot at the Borgata that rated as one of the largest in the casino’s nine-year history.

Aaron Neville
‘My True Story’ (Blue Note)
Aaron Neville’s sweet, soulful voice is about as American as Apple Pie. On his new solo album, My True Story, Neville sings some of his favorite songs of the doo-wop era, some, such as the Ronettes’ “Be My Baby” and Curtis Mayfield’s “Gypsy Woman,” from a slightly later era in the history of American pop. Blue Note Records president and formidable musician Don Was produced the record with Keith Richards, who also plays guitar throughout. “These songs helped to mold me into who I am,” says Neville. “They’re all dear to my heart, and they rode with me, in my bones, through all these years.” Other standout songs include “Under the Boardwalk,” “Tears On My Pillow,” “Little Bitty Pretty One” and the opener, “Money Honey.” Neville will be featured in a PBS special in March; check out this album before you watch it. — Jeff Schwachter
