‘Boardwalk Empire’ Season 3 Premiere in A.C.
Although all of the specifics are not set yet, Caesars Atlantic City will indeed be hosting a free (doors open to the public at 8pm, must be 18 or over) screening of the premiere episode of season three of the HBO original series Boardwalk Empire in the Circus Maximus Theater on Saturday, Sept. 15, 9pm, the night before it airs on HBO. There will be a cash bar and cast members from the show will be on hand to pose for photos and sign autographs, including Anthony Laciura (Eddie Kessler) and Stephen DeRosa (Eddie Cantor). The debut episode of season 3, “Resolution,” will premiere on HBO Sunday, Sept. 16, at 9pm. According to the show’s creator Terry Winter, the 2012 season of the multiple award-winning series, starring Steve Buscemi as Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, and based in Prohibition era Atlantic City — as well as Chicago, New York and Washington, DC — is still being shot, with the season’s final two episodes set to end filming in September. “We are currently shooting episode 11 [and] we are in the process of prepping episode 12, which should start shooting in about a week and that will be it,” Winter told Atlantic City Weekly prior to the Labor Day holiday weekend. “We’ll wrap up at the end of September. So, yeah, we’re coming down the home stretch of season three.” Expect to see several new characters in the incredible first few episodes of the third season. Stockton Art Gallery Hosts Two Fall Exhibitions
Two new exhibitions debuted on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey’s two-level art gallery, and will be available for public viewing free of charge Monday through Saturday, noon-7:30pm, and Sunday, noon-4pm, through Nov. 17. The art gallery is located in the college’s L-Wing, adjacent to the Performing Arts Center. The lower level of the gallery features a collaboration called “Perception Shift,” which is an exhibition of eights artists from the United States and Canada. According to a statement by the exhibition’s curator, Heather Gibson, the artworks feature “dynamic explorations of visual and conceptual perception; a multi-media show that includes paintings, fiber, collage, cut paper and glass, and a short film by the Quay Brothers called Anamorphosis that celebrates illusionistic painting.” The exhibition on the second level is called “Learning from New Jersey” and features paintings by artists Tim Daly and Valeri Larko, and an exhibition essay by poet Joel Lewis. In his essay Lewis states, “The lesson from New Jersey is this — that the beautiful landscape you just drove past might just be a Superfund site [a site once contaminated by hazardous waste but since cleaned up] and that our crazy quilt of meadows, jughandle turns, cranberry bogs, skyways, highlands and megamalls is part of an awkward dialectic that these artists both accept and thrive within.” For more, call 652-4566, e-mail denise.mcgarvey@stockton.edu, or go to stockton.edu and click the Arts & Culture link. — Ray Schweibert
Garden Pier Gets (More) History
The Atlantic City Free Public Library will now be operating the Atlantic City Historical Museum located across from Revel on the Garden Pier, it was announced before the Labor Day holiday weekend. The Historical Museum’s collection and operations have been transferred to the library, which will manage the museum. The library, which is a service of the City of Atlantic City, reopened the Historical Museum on Aug. 27. The museum’s hours of operation are 10am to 5pm Monday through Saturday. The City of Atlantic City, the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection contributed to the 2012 renovation of Garden Pier, where the recently re-opened museum has been upgraded with an “improved exterior and interior for a more appealing appearance,” according to a press release from the CRDA. The city’s Art Center, which stands across the pier from the Historical Museum, has also been upgraded in the Garden Pier renovation, which has included updates to lighting, structural supports, landscaping, the demolition of the pier’s weathered ocean side and work on the interior of the Historical Museum. According to a report, the library has big plans for the historical center, including the incorporation of select items from its outstanding Alfred M. Heston Collection, introducing new displays and exhibits and possibly providing free Wi-Fi access and more public seating on the pier as a whole. The extensive Heston Collection, which is housed at the Main Library in downtown Atlantic City, includes published and unpublished works, including photographs, postcards and other memorabilia. The library will partner with outside organizations to display their collections at the museum as well. “We are grateful to the Atlantic City Historical Museum board members for the trust they have placed in us to continue their work of showcasing Atlantic City’s rich history on Garden Pier,” Atlantic City Free Public Library director Maureen Sherr Frank said. “We have a golden opportunity to create something special at the museum with the various collections that are now available to us,” Library Board of Trustees president William Cheatham said.
