ATLANTIC CITY — Parents and children are getting ready for the fall school season and, in this economy, we thought it might be helpful to advise our readers on some of the good bargains to be had in the southern New Jersey area. Cheap and fun things that won’t break your bank — so that you have money for school clothes, supplies, gasoline ... you get the idea.

(We don’t want to alarm you, but in the time you’ve been reading this, the stock market dropped 500 points ... Ok, it’s back up 350 points. Whoops, down again.)

We wish that was more of an exaggeration, but the fact is these are uncertain times and we could all use a financial break. Fortunately, along with a plethora of thrift shops and consignment stores that have sprouted up in our region over the past few years — including two Goodwill stores, a nicely stocked Salvation Army on Albany Avenue in Atlantic City and several newcomers such as the ARC Thrift Store and the The Alcove Thrift Shop (both located in the Tilton Shopping Plaza in Northfield and both to help raise money for good causes) as well as others in Galloway, Margate, Pleasantville, and Somers Point, where slightly worn clothes and other items can be found for dirt cheap (hopefully minus the dirt) — there are many deals to be had, both online (see this story at acweekly.com for more free and cheap ideas) and while you’re out and about.

Here’s a look at just some of the area’s “cheap thrills.”

What? You knew that’s what we meant by cheap thrills all along, right?

Inaugural Indie Music Fest in Mays Landing
By Katarina Corda

MAYS LANDING, N.J. — Verbal Designs Entertainment (VDE) will host its first Indie Music Festival Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Watering Hole Cafe in Mays Landing. The event will showcase local artists from a diverse set of musical backgrounds, ranging from rock ‘n’ roll to hip hop. With over 50 acts alternately performing on a single stage, the festival will feature a jam-packed list of acts, making for a non-stop day of entertainment. VDE, an independent hip-hop record label located in Mays Landing, opted to produce the festival in order to provide local talent a platform to perform their own original music. By creating a day-long concert event, VDE hopes to give local Indie artists a chance to share their own music with a larger audience. Dead Fish Handshake, right. According to festival producers, “Rock-and-roll cover bands may be well known in our area for covering other artists’ songs but not for their own original music. The indie festival gives these bands an opportunity to play original music for their fans and music fans alike. This is a great opportunity for local artists and music lovers to come together and experience music together at its grass roots.” The show will begin with ska/punk...

Music Beats On and On

By Raymond Tyler

ATLANTIC CITY — As we near the end of another great summer, there are still some cool concerts and musical events left this season. I am looking forward to YouTube/a cappella sensation Straight No Chaser. If the group’s non-holiday catalogue is as fun as the songs that have become Christmas/Chanukah classics on my laptop, then I am sure the concert will be fun. In fact, several readers have already endorsed Straight No Chaser, performing at Harrah’s Concert Venue through Sept. 4.
Another big deal for me is Donnie Osmond coming to the Borgata on Saturday, Aug. 27. I would pay twice the admission to hear Osmond discuss candidly the music business and the changes since he and his brothers first took to the stage in the 1970s. As we say in my circle, Donny Osmond “has seen a lot of...

The ‘New’ Stylistics?

By Jerry Blavat

Greetings and salutations — and lo and behold, my main man Frankie Valli is back at the Borgata. It’s always sold out, and you know that Frankie at Memories on a Saturday night is always the musical sound that we’ll put down.
And the nights just get better and better. Last Saturday the stars came out in droves. My old friend Herb Spivak, his lovely wife Marcy and kids began the night, along with Brian from the Buck Hotel and his entire family. Then my old pal Herb Lipson from Philadelphia Magazine was there with his family. And it kept getting better — Dr. Paul Gross and his lovely Anita, Jonathan Saidel on the dance floor with Judge Maria Sisofo, whose mom is one of my favorite...
