ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY — In casino show business, timing is especially everything when it comes to New Year’s Eve.
In a perfect world, if the casinos had their way, the year would always end on a Friday or Saturday. It would never end on a Monday, as it does this year.
Because 2012 is going out on a Monday, entertainment offerings are noticeably slim when compared to years that ended over the course of a weekend.
“If [New Year’s Eve] falls on a weekend — even if it’s a Sunday — [the casinos] are more inclined to book heavier,” said one booking agent who does business with Atlantic City casinos. “They can make more creative multiple-show deals with the [entertainers] and have them for more than one night. But with New Year’s Eve on a Monday, it looks like the entertainment focus is more centered on the days leading up to [Dec. 31].”
Unless there are some last-minute surprises — which is doubtful this late in the game — there are just five headliners working public shows in the casinos on New Year’s Eve along with Life In Color, the big electronic music dance (EDM) party that will be held in a giant tent pitched at Bader Field.
This doesn’t include private shows featuring headline artists that casinos often throw on New Year’s Eve for their premium players.
As 2012 morphs into 2013, the casino shows will split the gaming generation gap in half.
The House of Blues at Showboat, for instance, will present the alternative rock band Jane’s Addiction in its 2,200-seat Music Hall. Revel has set their sight squarely on a younger demographic that’s into EDM by turning its 5,000-capacity Ovation Hall venue into a massive dance club featuring world-class Dutch DJ and EMD producer Tiesto doing the spinning on the big stage.
Borgata, which has a private party scheduled for its Event Center, will open up its Music Box for a performance by comedian Billy Gardell, who stars on the CBS sitcom Mike & Molly.
Resorts and the Tropicana and Resorts are going back to the beginning and end of the 1970s as Resorts presents the long-running rock band Grand Funk Railroad Dec. 30-31 and the Tropicana offers the latest edition of disco era stalwarts the Village People on Dec. 31.
But in the days leading up to Dec. 31, Atlantic City is loaded with mostly contemporary shows. Revel, which has been curiously quiet this fall with only one major show — Aerosmith — since September, has secured Kanye West for three shows in Ovation Hall Dec. 28-30. West was a last-minute addition to Revel’s summer lineup and sold out a pair of concerts over the July 4th holiday weekend.
The House of Blues skews all across the demographic spectrum with shows during the three nights preceding Dec. 31. On Dec. 28, the funky, Philadelphia-based band The Roots performs a one-night stand.
British dubstep producer and DJ Rusko follows the Roots with a show on Dec. 29 before turning the Music Hall stage over to the re-born early ’90s vocal group Backstreet Boys on Dec. 30.
"It’s a great time for us, and a great time for me. I’ve never really saw myself as just a DJ, I saw myself as a performer and being technically involved. I’m in my element right now.”
"LineRocket Entertainment plans to become the sole source of EDM music festivals in Atlantic City and we have some big plans to bring the top artists in the world for Memorial Day weekend and ..."
No East Coast town does New Year’s Eve better than Atlantic City and its environs (yes, New York City, that includes you), so here are a few suggestions for those who have not yet gotten around to planning out their big night.
Bader Field will host a 2013 New Year’s Eve event that will paint the town red, green, blue, and yellow.
" I’m the baseball that kind of like crashed through the window on the side of the house and fell into the living room."
Among A.C.’s future entertainment focal points will be the legendary Brits performing their rock opera ‘Quadrophenia’ at Boardwalk Hall in 2013.
If nothing else, 2012 was a year of partnerships and coming together in the Atlantic City region.

Headlining the countdown to midnight is famed electro house artist and DJ, Steve Aoki, who will be joined by Tommy Trash, Adventure Club, and David Solano.
Here are a few ideas for having fun on NYE and still keeping some of that cash Aunt Bea gave you for Christmas.
Auld acquaintance of 2011 may best be forgot for many — and how better to clear the cache and ring in a fresh slate of calendar dates than by partying like there’s no tomorrow? In Atlantic City the choices on New Year’s Eve are nearly endless.
Following a weeklong break, the casino showrooms will spring to life following the Christmas holiday weekend for an all-out New Year’s Eve (and New Year’s Day) celebration.
I received more than a few calls, e-mails and Facebook messages asking why the concert was being staged at Madison Square Garden and not at Boardwalk Hall.
July 4th is on a Wednesday this year, which is usually a good thing for resort businesses. It means that some Jersey shore visitors will celebrate the holiday the weekend before the holiday and some will celebrate the weekend after the holiday, which equates to more business for everyone … at least that is the theory.

In a year that saw the return of widespread protests around the world, the power and potential of grass-roots movements, such as Occupy Wall Street, more and more bad economic news and forecasts, the music industry seemed to bounce back with a bunch of solid releases, including new albums by Kanye West and Jay-Z, Adele, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, and others, as 'indie' labels such as Sub Pop, Yep Roc, and ANTI-, emerged as the leaders of a new renaissance in the music biz. Meanwhile, reissues, by specialty labels like Legacy, were among the most exciting "new" music of 2011. Atlantic City Weekly runs an Album of the Week column on the Coasting page each week, and the editors have put together a list of the best 2011 albums of the bunch, as well as several re-issues, and albums we didn't get a chance to write about yet for a total of 50 albums that you may or may not have heard yet. 2011 Albums of the Year (in no particular order. Hip-hop isn’t what it was during the late 1980s when there were a number of incendiary acts, none larger than Public Enemy, which rapped about what mattered with a palpable intensity. That was a golden era. A minority of contemporary hip-hop artists are rapping about what matters. You can put Jay-Z and Kanye West onto that list. The iconic recording artists aren’t like their peers, many of which are content to wax about conspicuous consumption.
