In a year that saw the return of widespread protests around the world, the power and potential of grass-roots movements, such as Occupy Wall Street, more and more bad economic news and forecasts, the music industry seemed to bounce back with a bunch of solid releases, including new albums by Kanye West and Jay-Z, Adele, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, and others, as 'indie' labels such as Sub Pop, Yep Roc, and ANTI-, emerged as the leaders of a new renaissance in the music biz. Meanwhile, reissues, by specialty labels like Legacy, were among the most exciting "new" music of 2011. Atlantic City Weekly runs an Album of the Week column on the Coasting page each week, and the editors have put together a list of the best 2011 albums of the bunch, as well as several re-issues, and albums we didn't get a chance to write about yet for a total of 50 albums that you may or may not have heard yet. 2011 Albums of the Year (in no particular order. Now that the turkey is carved, all thoughts turn to Christmas and, of course, lighthouse climbing. Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City has lined up a couple of holiday events for families that offer climbs of the lighthouse for a great look at Christmas decorations around the city.
'A Century of African-American Music' How do you convey the excitement of African-American dance? Pattie Harris' Atlantic City Dance Theatre will set out to do just that Saturday, March 29, with a high-stepping show celebrating 100 years of music and dance at Dante Hall. Tickets ($15) can be purchased at the door or at dantehall.org. Harris, pictured, is an Atlantic City native known worldwide as a dancer and choreographer. She says that Saturday night's celebration will bring back some of the magic and glamour from the city's Club Harlem days. "The Club Harlem was the only place like it on earth," she says. "We produced glamorous and extravagant shows. The lights, the dancing, the girls and the costumes were as big as anything seen in Vegas." Harris says to expect the best in African-American music from the last 100 years. The playlist will include the music of Aretha Franklin, Little Richard, Cab Calloway and others. The show starts at 7:30pm, but getting there an hour earlier will provide a chance to meet the performers at a pre-show reception. -- Raymond Tyler 'Caring' at Harrah's In the new PBS documentary, Caring for Your Parents, above, award-winning filmmaker Michael Kirk explores an issue...

“I like the one where Sister Agnus smacks Dirty Dave for being rude, then the Pirate takes them all hostage off the coast of A.C in his rickity pirate vessel. Then Jonny stone paddles up along side the boat and has a verbal argument with the pirate leading to a battle royal on deck! In the end though, sister Agnus says a prayer and everyone rides a tube onto shore only to be hoarded by seaguls and bums. That's my favorite one”
