Keeping Up

I was born in Atlantic City and have lived in Galloway Township for the majority of my life. When I was younger, I would always complain about the lack of things to do for someone under 21 in our area, but in retrospect we were actually pretty lucky.

We had the opportunity to take a trip to Atlantic City for a visit to the Ocean One Mall, or the bowling alley at Showboat or maybe even Trop World at the Tropicana! I loved it; they had bumper cars, a roller coaster and, of course, the Ferris wheel.

Over the years, all of these fun places slowly became just memories. Although these great amenities would eventually be replaced, they’ll never be forgotten.

Ever since the time I was able to go out and enjoy the fun spots in and around Atlantic City, I have always known that the Atlantic City Weekly / Whoot! was the source of all dining, entertainment and happenings in the area.

It has been neat to watch the changing Atlantic City region over the past three decades. Likewise, AC Weekly has gone through many changes over that time.

The paper started out as a small publication created in Lew Steiner’s garage; it didn’t even come out weekly at first. Now, as our town has changed with the times, so has the paper.

The Whoot! became Atlantic City Weekly not too long ago and now not only is a weekly newspaper, but has morphed into an always-updated, user-friendly Web site; a video production operation; an up-to-date blog and even has spots on television during the NBC 40 news.

My, how things have changed — and for the better.

Similarly, Atlantic City, over the past decade, has updated itself, bringing in establishments and venues that are more suitable for today’s market and which aim to bring in a more diverse tourist crowd.

As a youngster, I would have never thought in my wildest dreams that one day the Ocean One Mall would become such an impressive place as The Pier Shops at Caesars.

I would have never thought that Trop World would be gone and then, a few years later, the retail shops, restaurants and clubs at The Quarter would be born.

I would have never thought that they would close the bowling alley at Showboat, but then years later introduce a House of Blues to the Atlantic City skyline.

Atlantic City has always been a city full of memories for anyone who has visited, lived and/or worked here. I am sure that with the planned future developments, the chic and fashion-forward boutiques, the hottest new restaurants and the hippest events and entertainment, we can look forward to many more memorable moments in Atlantic City and its neighboring communities.

And we can certainly look forward to finding out about all of this great stuff over the next 35 years and beyond right here in Atlantic City Weekly and acweekly.com.

That is why Atlantic City Weekly is so highly regarded in our area. Even when the good old Whoot! became Atlantic City Weekly, it was obvious that the change was for the good and was in step with the changes happening throughout the A.C. market.

I grew up with the Whoot! and now all these years later I am writing for the paper. This is a dream come true for me and I am very honored to be a part of this special team of people, as well as the rich history and bright future of Atlantic City.

“How true and wonderful your column is, taking me down memory lane. Whitney you are an excellent addition to the ever evolving AC WEEKLy, especially for female readers. Your passion to Atlantic City is quite evident.”

“Looks like, once again, Whitney has her friends and family throwing her column more meaningless bouquets. In what respect is the author providing any meaningful service "especially for female readers?" Do yourselves a favor and read through the archives of this "column." With perhaps one exception, nothing she has written has ever been targeted at "female readers." The footnote that follows every column explaining that the column is aimed at "female" readers is just a scam and a sham. Why not employ a REAL professional journalist to write the column? Did A.C. Weekly actually check out Ms. Ullman's background before hiring her?”

“To the commenter "Another Female Reader"; are you by any chance drunk? I mean are you serious? Do you have a life? What is your background to criticize someone writing a decent column for a living. What do you do? Are you happy? Sounds like you're a miserable bitch. Go cry in your pillow your freaking leprechaun”

“haha..yea WTF! Another female reader sounds vaguely familiar, almost like it could be Danielle M. I mean seriously, why do you harp on this columnist so much. You are so lame. Its is so obvious that you think you are such a great writier and that you deserve to have this job, well you aren't going to get anywhere being a bitch. You have major mental issues. Go pick on someone else. You are one of those people who just cant be happy for anyone. You are a 100% LOSER!! And wear it proud because that is probably the best compliment you have ever gotten or will ever get from anyone.

The funny thing is that you are missing the whole point about these columns. They all have to do with female issues and they all have to with life circumstances. Whitney doesn't need to talk about what tampons to choose or going to the OBGYN or pregnancy horrors. so basically I say, GET A LIFE STUPID LOSER BITCH!
