Economy Eshmonomy. Yeah, I said it, but it’s time for you to be saying it too.

As we all know a couple of years ago there was a dramatic downturn in the economy and most of us were affected. However, as with anything dramatic that happens in our lives, we need to learn how to adapt and survive. There are a few of us who were able to do so, however, there are still many of us who are slacking at our jobs or making excuses not to look for jobs because we are blaming it on the economy.

If there is nothing available in your particular field right now, that can surely be tough. However, I come across many business owners — almost daily — who are searching for various types of employees. Granted, some positions are part time or may not pay a lot, but when you need money then you should think about taking anything available. Especially if it’s a customer-oriented job: then, you can meet new people and make new contacts. And some of these smaller jobs may lead to bigger ones. You never know. As they say, you can’t win if you don’t play.

Many people are taking on second jobs these days and working in fields that they never thought they’d be in, but that is definitely acceptable in today’s world.

There is another saying: “Stop being reactive and start being proactive.” In my opinion, we need to start thinking of new and innovative ways to stay in business as well as find business. We can do it!

So in this job market, get out there, make yourself known and don’t be afraid of rejection. Everything happens for a reason so maybe a job you didn’t get wasn’t the right one for you in the first place.

On a similar note, if you’re an employer and you recently had to cut pay or lay off people, then it is imperative to make sure your current employees feel important and appreciated. Keep them motivated because they won’t automatically feel special that they weren’t cut. On the contrary, most of them are probably stressed out and nervous that they could be next. Little things can go a long way such as having small contests and taking everyone out for happy hour.

Stay positive!

Whitney’s Radar:

I had the best time this past weekend at a dinner with basically a dozen strangers. I figured that since we weren’t that big of a group and were in a circular table that it would be fun to play an icebreaker game called “Two Truths and a Lie.” This is the game: Each person says two truths and one lie about themselves and then everyone has to guess which one is the lie.

With this game, you can find out extraordinary things about people. For instance, one guy we met has been responsible for setting up 10 marriages. Another guy was nominated for a few Grammys. One of the best truths of the night was from a girl who was born with a double uvula! Well, that certainly got the crowd roaring. (However, I’m not sure the guys actually knew what the uvula means.)
