This Game We Call Life

Remember when you were young and naive?

Remember when your parents would say, “I’ll explain it to you when you’re older”?

Isn’t it funny how when we watched television shows as a kid there were innuendos that only an adult would understand, but still we thought it was funny because of the mannerisms or expressions we saw (Three’s Company anyone?).

Now when we watch a show we haven’t seen in years we may say to ourselves, “Wow, I had no clue that this is what they meant. That went right over my head.”

I remember watching the show Married with Children as a kid, but then as I got older my mom told my sister and I that we couldn’t watch it anymore. Of course, we told her we wouldn’t and then watched it anyway — until we could hear her approaching the TV room and we would swiftly change the channel.

The point I’m trying to make — aside from recalling classically bad TV shows — is that as we got older we became wiser and we started to understand more. In life our knowledge is limited to the experiences we have. Sometimes we may feel that we understand certain circumstances because we look at how others are feeling and then make our decision based off of what we see, but maybe not what we actually grasp or understand ourselves.

If we don’t take chances, meet new people and put ourselves out there, we won’t have the opportunity to learn and expand our horizons. Who wants to go through life missing out on the infinite opportunities and possibilities that exist out in our big world? I certainly don’t. We tend to look up to our elders because they are wiser. Now we have that opportunity to share our wisdom with our children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc. All of our experiences in life — the good, the bad and the ugly — are learning ones. They say that knowledge is power. It’s good to be in the know, so make sure to keep your mind open, because it will lead to a better understanding of this game we call life.

Whitney’s Radar

In today’s shaky economy many businesses are struggling, but there are also many people out there, especially locally, who are bold enough to take a chance and start a new business.

As a small business owner, many times we have great ideas and concepts, but not always enough funds for important things such as office space, equipment or marketing and sales resources.

Our ideas are what get us by and we hope that as business picks up we can start to afford all of those basic luxuries.

Well, now we don’t have to worry as much anymore, thanks to Jamie Siracusa.

He couldn’t have had better timing for the grand opening of the Business Excellence Center, located at 501 Scarborough Dr., directly behind the English Creek Shopping Center in Egg Harbor Township.

I was honored to be there for the recent ribbon cutting because not only is this an excellent idea and a much-needed service in our community, but I was also surrounded by great local business professionals who, like me, want to see this succeed

In the e-mail invite to the ribbon cutting that was sent out to a select group of people, the Business Excellence Center is described as: “A new concept in doing business in South Jersey, offering a unique blend of business management, marketing & sales resources with ‘sliding scale’ of virtual office solutions. Success has a home. You can find office space anywhere or you can build your dreams at the Business Excellence Center.”

In my opinion, this is a great opportunity for people in our area looking to set out on their own.

“I like the first half of this article better than the www.bec-us.com part. Great perspective and very well written! Thanks for both! - Jamie”
