Ocean City: "America's Favorite Family Resort"
The Atlantic City area has been attracting people to the southern New Jersey shore for more than a century, racking up a pretty impressive list of past memories and creating an ever-changing present. Even if you’ve got sand in your shoes and summer here every year, there’s always something new to discover and learn about the Queen of Resorts and the shore towns that surround it. Here’s just a brief taste of the varied traditions and attractions that make up the shore area, from A to Z.
A tlantic City Pop Festival. The other Woodtsock, held 41 years ago this summer at the A.C. Race Course, included artists such as Santana, Janis Joplin, Frank Zappa and Joni Mitchell.
B oardwalk. There are many boardwalks in the region, including the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk and the Ocean City Boardwalk, and of course, the ones down in Wildwood and Cape May.
C lub Harlem. Legendary nightspot on Atlantic City’s famous Kentucky Avenue attracted superstars from jazz and other genres for decades before meeting the wrecking ball in 1992.
D usk. The hip nightclub at Caesars has been attractive to both celebs and partygoers since its inception last year.
E dwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. Take a tranquil trip around the refuge’s paths, which host many migrating birds and beautiful views. This treasure in Galloway Township is located near both the Noyes Museum and the Historic Towne of Smithville.
Formica’s rolls. If you get a sandwich in the Atlantic City area, it’s likely on a Formica Bros. roll. The bakery in Atlantic City has been baking bread and other goods since 1919. Last year, a new location opened in Northfield.
G ardner’s Basin. This tourist and boating area in Atlantic City features crafters, restaurants, fishing and party boats, the Atlantic City Aquarium and gorgeous sunsets.
H ouse of Blues at Showboat. Opened in late June 2005, this music and entertainment complex off the A.C. Boardwalk has brought everybody from 50 Cent (this June) to Gnarls Barkely to the White Stripes and LL Cool J to town.
I zakaya. Michael Schulson brought this modern Japanese pub to the Borgata in 2008. Now offering specially priced sushi and cocktails every Monday evening. A hip nightlife feel and fabulous sushi and cocktails.
J et Skiing. Or waverunning or parasailing or taking a cruise; you can find most of the water sport activities you care to try in the area. Just wait till the water warms up.
K nife and Fork. Landmark restaurant, established in 1912. A must do for a first-time visitor to A.C.
L ucy the Elephant. The popular pachyderm amusement, located in Margate, is a national landmark and is more than a century old.
M ack and Manco. It’s debatable, but most locals and visitors agree that this Ocean City-based pizza operation produces some of the best pies in the country.
N ightlife. As Atlantic City continues to embrace other types of entertainment to offset competition from neighboring states with legalized gaming, this is one area where the resort town is large and in charge.
Ocean City. “America’s Favorite Family Resort” is quiet and beautiful in the “off-season,” but once Memorial Day weekend comes around, it breaks out of its cocoon big-time.
Pitney, Jonathan. The guy who started it all. Pitney arrived in the Absecon area around 1820 and looked to create a health resort. He lobbied for the building of Absecon Lighthouse and construction of rail service connecting Absecon Island to Philadelphia. His brainchild is still growing.
The famed creator of Sherlock Holmes and escape artist Harry Houdini were resort guests in June of ’22.
‘I’m an old soul that likes classic music, vintage clothes and older women. I don’t think I have the same goals as many of my peers.’
May is a month of openings in the southern New Jersey shore area. Flowers open, beaches open, Boardwalk french fry stands open ... it goes on and on. But most of all, visitors and residents shake off the winter blues and open themselves up to a little warm weather fun.
