MAYS LANDING, N.J. — Discovery of a 250-year-old deed sparked the idea for a special event to be hosted by the Atlantic County Clerk’s Office on Thursday, Sept. 27.
The document — restored and preserved through a joint effort between the Clerk’s Office and Egg Harbor Township historian June Sheridan — records the 1761 purchase of 100 acres for 112 British pounds in what is now called Mullica Township in Atlantic County.

The document will be unveiled at the Atlantic County Clerk’s Office, located at 5901 Main Street, Mays Landing. The public is invited to attend the event, which will be held between 10am and noon at the Historic Court House (also at 5901 Main Street in Mays Landing), and the event will be broadcast live during the Barbara Altman Show on WOND Radio 1400-AM.
The document will be the centerpiece of the day’s program, according to County Clerk Ed McGettigan (pictured left) which will focus on the importance of preserving Atlantic County history.
“We want to also invite the public to bring in and possibly display unique items with historical significance to Atlantic County for the event,” said McGettigan in a media release.
The meeting will also include the honoring of former Atlantic County Executive Richard Squires (right) for his efforts as chairman of the Atlantic County Historic Society, his 38 years of dedicated public service in Atlantic County, and for his service to his country with the United States Navy in Korea.
Members of the Atlantic County Historic Society will be on hand during the event.
