The recently proposed Lighthouse Park Project is part of a far-reaching plan to revitalize Atlantic City’s South Inlet in the resort’s newly created Tourism District.
ATLANTIC CITY — The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) authorized in a recent board meeting a proposed inter-governmental agreement with Atlantic County to provide $4.2 million in Atlantic County Open Space funds for the Absecon Lighthouse Park Project. The park project would involve buying up private and public land in a six-block area around the lighthouse, developing it to be more appealing to residents and tourists, and preserving it as open space.
"The Absecon Lighthouse is a treasure that should become a ‘must see’ destination for visitors coming to Atlantic City,” says CRDA deputy executive director Susan Ney Thompson (pictured below, with executive director John Palmieri). “The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority has been at work on the Lighthouse Park Project for nearly three years with property owners and Atlantic County government to secure land and funding to create the Lighthouse Park.”
An additional $1.8 million in CRDA funds would be designated for acquisition, relocation, demolition and remediation costs to create the park, and is part of a more broad-based effort that includes establishment of new residential units, restaurants, specialty shops and boutiques in the South Inlet area as outlined in Atlantic City Tourism District Master Plan.
“This is a $12 million project that will create an aesthetically pleasing open space from the Absecon Lighthouse eastward to [the city-owned] Altman Park, which fronts the Boardwalk at the Absecon Inlet waterway, and provide street enhancements for pedestrian and bicycle access,” says Thompson.
“The City of Atlantic City, Atlantic County, the state of New Jersey and the CRDA are all stakeholders in this project. It is an important piece in the development of the South Inlet area of Atlantic City — a priority area in the Tourism District Master Plan — and is a shining example of what can be accomplished when there is partnership between stakeholders.”
The Lighthouse Park project is pending approval of the Atlantic County Board of Chosen Freeholders, but Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson publicly acknowledged his support of the project on the county Web site (aclink.org).
One year to the date Gov. Chris Christie signed landmark legislation designed to revitalize Atlantic City and set the surrounding region on a new course for economic growth, the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) adopted the Atlantic City Tourism District Master Plan in a special meeting Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the A.C. Convention Center.
Although the Tourism District Master Plan is due Feb. 1, it won't be presented to the public on that date. However, the CRDA will present the master plan to the public on Monday, March 26, at noon.
