The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and the Noyes Museum of Arts announced a new partnership Thursday that will expand educational programs, exhibits and facilities at both institutions.

Though financial details weren’t released, the partnership helps the Noyes Museum at a time when many cultural institutions are suffering during the recession and allows Stockton to continue an expansion of its own student art programs and Arts and Humanities degree programs.

“I am delighted Stockton has entered into a mutually beneficial agreement with the Noyes Museum that will provide enjoyment for the southern New Jersey arts community, increase opportunities for our students and expand programming at the Noyes,” says Stockton President Herman J. Saatkamp, Jr. in a release. “The College has a history with the Noyes family going back to our earliest days. In 1975, honorary Stockton degrees were conferred upon Fred and Ethel Noyes [founders of the museum]. Over the years, the Noyes Museum has hosted numerous Stockton events, including our annual Alumni holiday reception. This partnership is a natural fit.”

The release also points to Stockton’s commitment to the building the museum occupies in Oceanville, just a few miles from the Stockton campus in Pomona. The college “will partner with the Noyes Museum and will provide significant renovations and upgrades to support an expanded array of educational opportunities, events, exhibits and performances at the nearby off-campus facility.

The college already maintains an art gallery as well as the Stockton Performing Arts Center on its campus.

Charles A. Bryant, Jr., President of the Noyes Museum Board of Directors says, “As the only art museum in South Jersey, this partnership with Stockton will enhance and deepen the community’s connection with New Jersey arts and culture.”

Among the programs to be affected are the school’s visual arts curriculum and a new Bachelor of Fine Arts degree currently under development. The museum also provides the school with another venue for events, exhibits and programs.

“A vibrant Noyes Museum is an asset to our community,” Saatkamp says. “Our ability to integrate the arts into our educational programming is adding value to our students’ education. This will be an extremely positive relationship.”

Michael Hyett, President of the Mr. and Mrs. Fred Winslow Noyes Foundation’s Board of Trustees says, “We view the partnership with great enthusiasm and we’re confident that the future looks a lot brighter for our local cultural gem, the Noyes Museum of Art. Our entire region will benefit from the enhanced programs, exhibitions and educational opportunities that will soon unfold as a result of the collaboration. Our founders, Fred and Ethel Noyes, would be extremely proud of the way the seed that they planted some 25 years ago has flourished.”

The school and the museum will hold a celebration titled “Making Noyes at Stockton”, consisting of events, performances and gallery exhibits from February 24-27. The events will be free and open to the public. For information visit www.stockton.edu or www.noyesmuseum.org
