“Firefighters never forget,” Atlantic City Fire Department Captain Michael Ruley tells me. That seems evident in this coming Saturday’s afternoon fundraiser dedicated to helping fellow firefighters and their families.

The proceeds will be divided between Zoe (Horton) Palermo and Thomas McMeekin Sr.

Zoe turns one soon. Her mother Shaina is retired ACFD Captain Sam Horton’s daughter. Around the time of Zoe’s birth, Shaina found out she had a rare uterine cancer. It has spread through the rest of her body, including her brain, which resulted in a stroke.

This stroke has left her right side debilitated, and speaking for her is an effort. Shaina has been in Cooper Hospital for approximately one year.

Tommy McMeekin is from a large Atlantic City family with family members who also are firemen and cops. In 1996, Tom was in an accident leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. Finances have remained a constant struggle since, and the firefighters have been doing what they can to help all along.

This Saturday, April 9, come out and support your community and join local firefighters as they compete in the ultimate eating challenge: The Big Teplitzky Firefighters Challenge, which is scheduled from 1-4pm at the Teplitzky's restaurant at The Chelsea in Atlantic City.

Enjoy specially priced cocktails and free appetizers while firefighters pig out for others! Tickets are priced $5 in advance; $10 at the door. Donations can be sent to: Atlantic City Professional Fire Fighters Local 198, PO BOX 1909, Atlantic City, NJ, 08404.

Donation infromation: 609-428-4550. Union headquarters: 609-348-0989

Babes Are Back For some, the new year means making (and breaking) resolutions, cleaning up after the holidays and a few months of scraping icy windshields. To some, Jan. 1 also means the hanging of their new Babes of Borgata Calendar. The Atlantic City casino's 2008 16-month calendar ($18.50) is out and as in past years features scantily clad Borgata associates. Shot by former Playboy model turned photog Lisa Boyle, the portraits were taken on location at different Borgata spots -- including the property's guest rooms and suites, Bobby Flay Steak and Wolfgang Puck American Grille, and the Spa Toccare. There will be an official launch party for the 2008 Babes of Borgata Calendar on Monday, Dec. 10 at the Borgata's mur.mur nightclub. Calendar models will be present as will host CariDee English, recent winner of America's Next Top Model. You can buy the new calendar at the Borgata's retail stores or online at theborgata.com.
