Blue Magic
Summertime in Atlantic City means many things, but one thing locals have come to love is all the free music. The city, along with concert series such as the Chicken Bone Beach Jazz Concerts, keep the Boardwalk's Kennedy Plaza hopping throughout the warmer months. But don't forget that the city has another great concert venue in Historic Gardner's Basin and this Saturday (May 30) they offer a free concert by Blue Magic, a powerhouse R&B group from the 1970s best known for their No. 1 hit "Sideshow." The concert, part of a festival day at Gardner's Basin, which also includes several local bands and vendors, is part of the basin's summer series. "We want to put on more of a family event with these concerts," says Wilbur Banks, assistant director of health and human services for the city. "This is an event where people can come with their children and set out their lawn chairs and picnic and just have a really great day. It's like the Camden waterfront. We want to really utilize a venue like Gardner's Basin." The city also hopes to put on events at the basin for the Fourth of July and Labor Day. For this concert, Blue Magic is a pretty cool get for the city. The group scored a major hit with "Sideshow" in 1974 and other hits include "Three Ring Circus" and "Stop to Start." Original members Keith Beaton and Wendell Sawyer lead the current makeup of the group. Other groups scheduled to perform include The Rick Cason Band, Bob Sterling & Pier Pressure and Angela Burton & Passion. The event takes place from noon to dusk Saturday, May 30. What feels good to me this year is all the music that’s happening for our children and community.
The City of Atlantic City is planning a massive Multi-Cultural and Heritage Festival, which will take over the resort town for three days, June 1-3.
