Or my summer summary of cool stuff happening over the next few weeks
I hope you've been enjoying the rain. I know it's nearly summertime, but lately we've had weather only Lilly and Herman from The Munsters, or Mortishia and Gomez of the Addams Family could love. I do believe that bluer skies are on the way. No matter what the weather, here is my summer list of happenings, events and cool stuff to do for throughout the summer.
Wizard World Philly, June 19-21 -- First of all, someone should bring a comic-book convention to Atlantic City. Until that happens, I am happy to join hundreds of other southern New Jersey sci-fi heads at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia for Wizard World, the biggest summer convention on the East Coast. Comics today are more diverse than they've ever been. At Wizard World you can meet all of today's legends and tomorrow's star writers and artists. New this year, Wizard World will also host a video-game expo. Add the screening rooms with advanced sci-fi movies and trailers, and classic movies and TV shows and Wizard World is this geek's dream weekend.
D.L. Hughley, June 19 -- The Borgata welcomes back one of the remaining Original Kings of Comedy, D.L. Hughley. Hughley has found success discussing everything from family to politics in his act. Hughley is one of the few comics in this day of political correctness that will hurt your feelings and make you laugh out loud.
Fame, June 22-Sept. 9 -- From the time I saw the movie I have loved the music, the dancing and the story about why people want to create art. Even today as an interviewer, that is the story I love "what drives people to success." I'm sure this version at the Tropicana will focus more on the song and dance but that's OK because Fame is the song and dance from my generation.
Styx, REO Speedwagon and .38 Special, June 26 -- OK, this one could be billed as "The Rock 104 Family Reunion" at the Borgata. All I need to say about this show is "Mr. Roboto." They should just hand out air guitars to this one as you walk through the door.
The Smothers Brothers, June 27 -- Tom and Dick come to the Borgata for one show. When you're TV legends, have thumbed your nose at U.S. Presidents, Congress and network television, you still get paid to sing and tell more jokes. One show is all you need. As much I enjoyed Laugh In and Chappelle Show, this live show will be a good warm up for the release of the Best Of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour DVD, and a new retrospective book called Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
The inaugural Legends of Hip Hop concert, June 27 -- This show should be in the Club Harlem Ballroom at the House of Blues, and will feature Doug. E. Fresh, the greatest living entertainer on the planet right now. Along with Biz Markie (and I hope they "beat box" together), Slick Rick the Ruler and Schooly D. I won't have this much fun again in A.C. for another 10 years.
Boyz II Men, June 27 -- Resorts is bringing the talented trio from Philly Town to the Superstar Theater. This is the show you want to get tickets for you and your girl. Smooth Shawn, Wanya and Nate will sing classics like "End of the Road." If you do go by yourself, you could still leave with a new girl/guy by the end of the show. That's how they do it.
Love Train: The Sound of Philadelphia, July 11 -- Broad Street comes to town, as several of Philadelphia International Records' biggest performers will be on stage. I plan to be there as the O'Jays sing "Stairway To Heaven" and "Forever Mine." If I get started now I may even find a date by then.
Michelle Moseley's One-Woman Show: My Past has Changed Me, July 19 -- This is one show off the Boardwalk and away from the casinos that I recommend. This will take place at the Northside Catering in Atlantic City. Moseley will be having the release party for her new CD My Past has Changed Me, and also performing her one-woman show of the same name, with special guests. Moseley is separating herself from other poets and spoken-word artists by using all of the gifts God gave her.
Along with all of this, I have a ball hosting my weekly open mike at Sherlock's Books and Café in Smithville every Tuesday. I still need to check out the fun at all of the great beach bars. Listeners to my radio show can win the chance to hang out with me at various casino events, and live shows. As summers go, so far this is one is kicking. Enjoy yourself and I hope to see you out under the sun.
