ATLANTIC CITY — If you want your children to continue being physically active and positively occupied once the school year begins, Back to School night is a must.

This is where most organizations present themselves or have representatives available to answer your questions about after-school and weekend recreational programs, free tutoring services, mentoring programs and extracurricular activities.

Of course, the old standards like the Police Athletic League (PAL) and the Boys and Girls Club (B&GC) are available, but at Back to School nights, you will often discover clubs, programs and opportunities that are not as well-known as the recreational and academic ones at PAL and B&GC.

It is also a time when parents share past experiences with various organizations and sometimes parents are each other’s best resource.

Teachers, counselors and parents can point you in the right direction for your child’s specific age, interests and needs.

At the high school level, there are numerous clubs and athletic teams to join or try out for, but here are some lesser-known possibilities for Atlantic City’s younger children:

The award-winning A.C. X-Clusive Drill Team runs all year long for boys and girls, ages 6 and up. All you need is energy, creativity and a commitment to practice. Both girls and boys perform dance routines, drumming and drill formations. (Click here for more)

The team practices three days a week after school at New Jersey Avenue School. By the way, their annual banquet is this coming Friday, Aug. 26, at the Soldier’s Home from 5:30-9pm and tickets are still available for $10. You can pay at the door. Call Latoya Dunston at 609-674-8909 for more information about an upcoming parent orientation session.

Down by Chicken Bone Beach
By Turiya S.A. Raheem

Atlantic City, like many other U.S. cities, once had segregated beaches, but they didn't start out that way. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Blacks and whites lived side-by-side, worked side-by-side and played side-by-side.

Still Telling the Story
By Michael Pritchard

It’s been 10 years since Henrietta Shelton first organized the Chicken Bone Beach free concert series on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. And despite a decade of bringing great jazz groups to the resort, the biggest testament to the series’ success may come on Thursday, Aug. 27, when New York’s Finest Jazz Ensemble (made up of N.Y.P.D officers, thus New York’s finest) takes the stage.

'I never want to be a gimmicky woman in jazz. It’s a by-product of what I do, because I am a woman, but I always wanted to be a great musician. ...I like wearing dresses and heels, you know, make-up. It’s funny, because I used to try to blend in when I first moved to New York. I was physically very girly, but I wore slacks and pants, because I wanted to blend in.'
