THE EIGHTH ANNIVERSARY OF one of the most tragic days in American history passed last Friday. If you haven’t thought about our troops in a while, take a moment and pray for them and their families and thank them for their service to our country.
Speaking of service to our country, columnist Whitney Ullman writes about a special World War II veteran that she knows (her grandfather) who was recently profiled in the New York Times.
Is it just me, or did it seem like a lot happened this past Tuesday, Sept. 15?
First, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke made a statement implying that the current recession “has probably ended,” according to reports. Bernanke also made it clear that the economy’s growth still isn’t very strong at all.
Also on Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration approved a H1N1 vaccine; up until this week, many local doctors were not sure if they would be offering the vaccine in addition to the influenza vaccine.
In Atlantic City, it was revealed (also) on Tuesday that a planned parking garage for the city would include a solar array and that companies had another 60 days to enter bids for the project. It’s about time to get some more spots in the resort town. I mean, seriously.
Something so strange sounding yet it’s true happened a week ago concerning Atlantic City: China agreeing to take on a chunk of Atlantic City’s future by signing a $1.7 billion deal with Revel Entertainment and Tishman Construction to “help bring the proposed 47-story hotel tower back to full-speed-ahead,” as Ray Schweibert wrote in an article last week. Tishman will continue construction on the project and the China State Construction Engineering Corp. will control 51 percent ownership.
Meanwhile, Resorts awaits its fate, as, at press time, the city’s first legal gambling hall still isn’t sure if it will be forced to close this week due to financial woes.
Heading into the upcoming weekend, a lot’s going on downa shore — speaking of, did you enjoy last week’s cover story, “A Sure Thing”?
ZZ Top’s at the House of Blues and Billy Gibbons talks about the Texas trio’s classic ’80s videos and songs, Atlantic City and the band’s upcoming recording project with acclaimed producer Rick Rubin.
Along with our “Fall Bridal Guide” (p. 31), Lori Hoffman, filing from the International Toronto Film Festival, interviews Matt Damon, Mike Pritchard previews next Thursday’s special symphony-with-a-twist-of-swing concert at the Borgata (p. 66), columnist Raymond Tyler visits a unique South Street-flavored shop in Smithville called The Underground, food writer Frank Gabriel takes in a glorious-sounding seafood meal at Luciano Lamberti’s Shore Club and Schweibert clues us all in on what Saturday’s (Sept. 19) Craft Beer Festival at Trump Marina is all about.
Reminder: We’re celebrating 35 years this year and would love to hear from our readers (new and old) for our upcoming special anniversary issue.
WHAT’S MORE IMPORTANT TO you, time or money? At first thought we may tend to lean towards money, because having lots of money would allow us to have free time, right? But think about it for a minute — money comes and goes, time comes and goes, but while we will almost always have the opportunity to make more money, we can never get our time back. Using your time wisely and surrounding yourself with people who aren’t what I call “time wasters” is so crucial to evolving as a person. A friend, Kern Brar, said it best by stating, “We should take a few minutes during our day to do the things we have to do, but then,...
