The first edition of Whoot! from June 19, 1974.
With the absence of the Atlantic City Surf this past baseball season, you may be under the impression that the topic of professional sports is a dead issue in the Atlantic City region — unless your talking about legalizing sports betting in the casino town.
Well, think again. This Friday (Oct. 30) over at the Borgata, baseball will be in the house in a big way. A day before the Phils’ first World Series home game since last fall (versus the Yankees in case you haven’t heard) two of the biggest sports-talk radio stations on the East Coast will be broadcasting inside the Borgata.
WFAN, New York’s premier sports station, and its morning team of Boomer [Esiason] and [Craig] Carton will be riling up the Yankee fans at one end of the property (at the B Bar) while Philadelphia sports station WIP will be revving up the Phillie phaithful on the other end of the casino with Angelo Cataldi and The Morning Show broadcasting in front of Gypsy Bar from 6-10am.
More sports: Over at the Ego Lounge at the Trump Taj Mahal this NFL season there have been a few NFL player appearances, including a recent meet and greet with New York Giants running back Amad Bradshaw on Oct. 12. Keep an eye out for more football stars at the lounge through the season.
Meanwhile, the 51st Atlantic City Marathon, which was in jeopardy of being cancelled this year due to lack of solid leadership, has been rescued by the community and will take place after all, beginning Sunday, Nov. 15, at 8:30am on the Boardwalk in front of Boardwalk Hall. Thanks in part to the Katz Jewish Community Center, Harrah’s Entertainment and the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority (ACCVA), the nation’s third oldest marathon is up and running again.
Speaking about the marathon, the ACCVA’s president Jeff Vasser alluded to other sports events that the city is committed to, saying, “The Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority is proud to do its part to keep the Atlantic City Marathon running. It’s events like the marathon, along with the A-10 men’s basketball championship, ECAC hockey, and the NCAA golf championship, that help diversify Atlantic City’s sports offerings and keep it a world-class resort.”

Finally, look out for next week’s special 35th anniversary issue. We’ve been working hard on compiling a lot of fun and great stuff for the issue and hope that it brings back good memories for our faithful readers — whether they have been picking up the paper since the old Whoot! days or just started reading over the last decade when it became Atlantic City Weekly.
Here’s a teaser (pictured); the first cover of the paper, from June 19, 1974.
Happy Halloween.
