Over the past 35 years the Whoot!/Atlantic City Weekly family has had some really good times. Covering the entertainment scene in one of the most active, dynamic and ever-changing entertainment hubs in the world and delivering updated information on a weekly basis has been a lot of work for everyone ever involved with this publication, but it has also been a lot of fun.
During the past five years that I’ve been on the Atlantic City Weekly’s editorial team, the last two and a half as editor, I’ve accumulated way more than a hard-drive’s worth of memories.
Like the tiny first-floor office that served as the full extent of the editorial space in our former home in an old Victorian house in Pleasantville.
Watching Jay Leno hold up a copy of Atlantic City Weekly on the Tonight Show.
I remember the numerous times over the past five years that both the editorial and advertising teams have won national and state awards.
I remember the thrill of celebrating our 5th annual Top 40 under 40 project with a huge bash at the Borgata last year.
I’ll never forget speaking with and meeting people I never imagined I would have the chance to otherwise — from the late Bo Diddley to Robert Plant to Chill Will.
It has been an honor to be with this publication for nearly six years and everybody who I work with I consider a friend.
It was no easy task for us to put this week’s issue together. More difficult than our annual Memorial Day weekend guide or our always jam-packed July 4 issue.
More daunting than re-launching our new Web site this past summer.
More work than producing videos for our site without much background in video production.
But as you flip through the pages, I think you’ll find it was worth the effort. I’d like to thank my tremendously talented editorial team — and our esteemed contributors — for the dedication and perspiration it took to put out this week’s issue.
Inside issue #45 of our 36th volume, there are no restaurant guides, no movie listings, no calendar listings or “Coasting” items. No headliner interviews or casino capsules. Instead you’ll find a variety of “Flashback” interviews with everybody from Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford to long-time sales rep Madelon Woller; old Whoot! and AC Weekly covers, photos and articles; vintage album reviews and other content intended to celebrate our 35th year.
Don’t fret, your favorite columnists are all here inside, graciously devoting their space this week to their thoughts on our collective anniversary.
Around the site and you’ll find even more — including a photo gallery of 35 years of covers, decades of concert photos and best of all — the entire first edition of Whoot! from June 19, 1974.
Come out and celebrate with us on Nov. 11 at The Pool at Harrah’s and you’ll be able to see the short anniversary video we’ve produced, too. It will eventually appear on our Web site, but we’d love to see you at The Pool to watch its premiere.
