It’s that time of year when we are joyous about having days off, but at the same time dreading the almost forced family time.
Most of us would love to take a holiday vacation, get away from our daily routines and experience new sights and cultures, but during this time of year we are stuck in holiday-related traffic and stressing out about superficial things.
Don’t lose sight of the fact that although it’s tough to get along with everyone, especially the odd family members that you just can’t relate to no matter what you do, that you are spending time together because deep down it is a “ritual of reassurance,” as the quote goes by Phillip Andrew Adams. (“To many people holidays are not voyages of discovery, but a ritual of reassurance.”)
You are part of something whole, whether you like it or not.
It’s always important to accept those who you don’t understand because we can’t change others, we can only control our own thoughts and choices. Enjoy your time with your family elders because that facet of the holidays gets overlooked too often. I can’t tell you how many times I hear my grandparents complain that they don’t ever hear from certain family members. And make an impact on the young ones because they are very impressionable. Give them wisdom and no matter what your financial situation, make them feel rich from love and respect.
And, of course, work on yourself. It’s easy for me to tell you what you should do, and easy for you to see what’s wrong with others, but during this time of year it’s usually an eye opener. We reflect on all that we have accomplished, or didn’t accomplish and think about our goals for the next year.
Tis the season to be ... buying. If you are in the 99 percent, of course, you may not have much to spend this season, but don’t fret; there are plenty of low-priced options for holiday gift giving and we’ve listed a selected bunch below. If you’re in the one percent, you probably have someone else ...
Giving back during the holidays is a given, and so far many of us have donated our time, food, money and clothes to those in need. Well, now is your chance to donate any new and gently used books.
Got a finicky food fanatic on your holiday shopping list? If so, please allow us to suggest a few local spots to pick up a culinary treat or cooking implement that’s certain to impress.
'The Nutcracker' is fundamental to every holiday season and has been part of the Atlantic City Ballet’s annual repertoire since its foundation in 1982.
During the past few years, critics of the Atlantic City casino scene have often sited a lack of family-style activities as one of the knocks against the town. That particular complaint melts away like freshly fallen snow when the holiday season rolls around every year.
Like just about every facet of the casino industry, shows that celebrate the holiday season have changed considerably over the years. Gone are the days when a seemingly endless array of top-name artists brought their seasonal productions to showroom stages.
