When setting out to form a tribute band, most folks plan it carefully, considering a variety of potential groups to pay tribute to, combing the classified ads and pestering old contacts to find the perfect musicians and finally fine tuning everything to be stage ready. Tuesday’s Gone, who will appear at the Showroom at Golden Nugget Saturday, Jan. 28, did the opposite.
“It actually kind of happened by accident,” says Ryan King, vocalist for the band. “I was at an open mic night in Raleigh celebrating my birthday. I ran into a few friends of mine who were guitar players and they asked me if I would want to get up onstage with them and sing a few Skynyrd songs. I said ‘yeah sure’ and it just sounded so incredible to me. It was the first time I had ever experienced singing with a live band and it just sounded so incredible. I made sure to get everybody’s phone numbers that night. We started rehearsing the following week, and the rest is history.”
Over the course of the last year, A.C. Weekly and Golden Nugget Atlantic City have paired up…
That was 12 years ago. Since then, this Raleigh-based tribute act has played stages large and small all over the country. “We became very popular very quickly and were lucky enough to get the attention of some local booking agents in the area that have relationships with theaters and venues all over. But we paid our dues at the beginning, too,” King says.
Tuesday’s Gone has even gotten big enough for most of the band members to not have to work regular day jobs.
“All of the guys find other ways to supplement their income, but the band is the most primary source for all of us.”
Of course in order to sustain this type of popularity, you need the fans. Luckily for Tuesday’s Gone, Lynyrd Skynyrd has one of the most rabid, passionate fan bases in all of rock music. Adding to that is the fact that most of the original members of Lynyrd Skynyrd are no longer with us, making a tribute band one of the only ways to get to hear these songs live as they originally sounded.
“If the tribute is done properly, then you have got the most dedicated fans in the world backing you. I know because I’m one of them,” King says.
