Atlantic City is about to shed its winter coat and get the parties started. The unofficial start of summer is here, and Memorial Day Weekend is filled with a ton of fun to welcome in the shore’s favorite season. With beaches being unlocked, fireworks, shows and more, there is something for everyone at this playground by the sea.

Official Beach Unlocking: Friday, May 26

Ocean City will unlock its beaches at noon Saturday, May 26, at the Moorlyn Terrace Beach. City officials and lifeguards will turn a large wooden key in the sand, the reverberations of which are believed to clear any barriers and open the Ocean City water. This is followed by the colorful Business Person’s Plunge, where several hundred enthusiastic business men and women jump into the ocean wearing everything from formal suits and briefcases to costumes that represent their profession.

Festivals, Fireworks and Fun: Saturday, May 26

Resorts Casino Hotel will host their Annual Beach Ball Drop on Friday, May 26. Festivities begin at 10 a.m. on the beach in front of Resorts. This free event will feature a variety of entertainment, contests, games and live radio broadcast. At 5 p.m. 5,000 beach balls suspended in nets over the Boardwalk will rain down on fun-seeking guests below.

Tropicana Atlantic City also plans to kick off summer with a bang starting 8 p.m. Friday, May 26. Enjoy a free multimedia light and sound show followed by an exciting fireworks display. The multimedia show will continue every night throughout the summer, while the fireworks display will take place every Saturday night.

Tropicana Light and Sound

This is the third year Tropicana will put on its Mulitmedia Light & Sound Show.

The inaugural weekend of the Atlantic City Boxing Hall of Fame is sure to be a “knockout event,” at the Claridge Hotel, where legends such as Mike Tyson and Don King will be honored for their contributions to this great sport. The Claridge will get summer started with a killer combo of entertainment. Beginning Friday with the ACBHOF Rooftop Kickoff Party at The Vue at Claridge. Saturday, May 27, will feature a full day of events including the Fan Fight Experience, the 2017 Honoree Gala and the Official After Affair. The weekend will conclude on Sunday, May 28, with the Induction Ceremony.

Let’s Get Physical: Saturday, May 27

The Ocean City Memorial Beach Challenge will be held Saturday, May 27. Registration will take place Friday, May 26, from 2 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, May 27, from 6 to 7:30 a.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. The race begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 27, and consists of a 2.5 mile obstacle course on the beach. There will also be a Kids Fun Run. Proceeds from the event benefit the 31 Heroes Project.

The Sounds of Summer: Saturday and Sunday, May 27 and 28

Ocean City will host The Bucks County Singers 6 p.m. Saturday, May 27. This free concert will take place outside of the Music Pier and feature an eclectic mix of choral music. This show has been a longtime favorite for Ocean City spectators.

The Ocean City Music Pier will host KC and the Sunshine Band on Sunday, May 28. Let the band’s happy tunes get your feet stomping and your hips swinging. The show will take place at the Music Pier at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $75. This is a dance concert with limited seating.

Memorial Day Parades: Monday, May 29

The Somers Point Memorial Day Parade will celebrate the holiday with marching veterans, military vehicles, scouts, bands, antique cars and more. The parade will begin 11 a.m. Monday, May 29. Family members of deceased veterans are encouraged to march in the parade and carry military pictures of their loved ones who have passed. The parade route begins at Dawes Avenue School and proceeds down Shore Road to Patriots Park. A short ceremony honoring fallen veterans of all wars will follow. Participants must be at the staging area at 10 a.m. (Dawes Avenue and Shore Road).

Somers Point isn’t the only town getting in the spirit of Memorial Day. The Linwood Memorial Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29, and will march on Shore Road at Poplar Avenue to All Wars Memorial Park. For more information call 926-5206 or go to

Egg Harbor Township will also host a Memorial Day Parade, to begin at 9 a.m. on Diamond Drive, heading west on Zion Road to Ocean Heights Avenue where it will conclude at Veterans’ Memorial Park.
