“Hot Girl Summer” may have been the pop culture catchphrase of the season (see Urban Dictionary) for reasons completely unrelated to the unbearable heat, but we have had a humid summer, giving us permission to dress the part.
The temperatures in South Jersey have cooled down quite a bit as we head into the unofficial end to summer this weekend, and while it may be a tad premature to break out the leather jackets and cozy sweaters, it’s just the right time to start transitioning to fall style.
From dark and moody floral prints, to puffy sleeves and pocket blazers, here are a few of this season’s big trends that you should start making room for in your closet right now.
The power puff
Remember the cold-shoulder trend of seasons past? Well, this autumn we say sayonora to open shoulders, and hello to exaggerated puff sleeves. This season, we are seeing the seemingly ladylike style take on fabrics like leather and utility-wear for a fresh, updated look — allowing you to take on two trends at once. From dresses to trench coats, this style is perfect for the office or brunch, and its a piece that transitions not only from summer to fall easily, but pairs well with sneakers, boots or sandals.

While floral patterns are often synonymous with spring, this fall we see an emergence of dark, “moody” floral designs. This season’s florals are Gothic or Renaissance-inspired, with deep wine-tone reds, purples and rich greens. An easy transition piece here is a midi or maxi dress that can be worn with open-toe sandals and layered with a sweater, or knee-high boots as the temperature cools down. Dark floral patterns make for an overall better investment and are an extremely wearable item, more so than light colors and pastels, as they can be worn throughout the year and styled in fresh ways, adapting to the seasons.

Summer’s obsession with barely-there sandals, gives way to fall’s big shoe trend — the bold, extra clunky, clogs. If you aren’t quite ready to fully embrace this footwear style, an open-toe shoe is a great option that you can wear throughout the warm, autumn days.
