Atlantic City casinos are eager to attract younger crowds.
For example, Bally’s Atlantic City will host another esports tournament Sept. 6 to 8. The Ultimate Gaming Championship’s Halo Classic will feature a double-elimination bracket and a $50,000 prize for the winning pool.
Wild Wild West at Bally’s has opened what is arguably the largest sportsbook in New Jersey, and Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa was not far behind with its flashy new sportsbook and lounge.
Add to that Borgata’s popular state-of-the-art Premier nightclub, as well as those at Ocean Casino Resort, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, and Tropicana Atlantic City.
But what about Bingo? Yes, Bingo. More specifically, Social Bingo — Bingo for millennials. It’s a big hit in the United Kingdom.
Already this month you can play Bingo every Monday at Golden Nugget Casino, Hotel & Marina, at Harrah’s Resort July 21, and Resorts Casino Hotel July 18 and 25. Earlier this month there was Bingo at Caesars Atlantic City, and Borgata periodically runs several sessions in one day.
However, most of the players are in their 50s — and they’re pretty serious in terms of how they lay out their cards on the table, and mark their cards before and during each session. Some display small stuffed animals or pictures of their grandchildren to bring them luck.
Aside from bags of pretzels and other snacks, there are few other refreshments available — and little or no alcohol is being consumed. Coffee and soft drinks are by far the strongest beverages you’ll probably find.
The atmosphere is intense as players listen closely for the combinations of letters and numbers that could bring them thousands of dollars in winnings.
So, as they do at Dabbers Social Bingo (Dabbers.Bingo) in East London, why not create an atmosphere more like a nightclub by adding loud pulsating disco music, dancing, and free-flowing cocktails and craft beers?
(A dabber is a small plastic bottle filled with translucent ink that has a sponge-like tip. Also known as daubers, they’re used to mark paper Bingo cards.)
Earlier this month, the Today Show aired a report from Dabbers, where Bingo callers don outrageous costumes and wear more make-up than 10 Victoria Secret models combined.
The marketing director there called it the UK’s, and possibly the world’s, first venue “specifically designed for maximizing enjoyment from the game.”
Maybe one of Atlantic City’s more enterprising casinos should give it a try – B-4 it’s too late.
