Richard Spurlock, banquet and catering chef at JD’s Pub & Grille in Smithville, is a Northeast Region Winner in the 2019 Neighborhood to Nation™ Recipe Contest from General Mills Foodservice. The 5th annual contest called on independent family or “neighborhood” restaurants to submit an original recipe to put their local dishes and local “flavor” in the national spotlight.
As a Regional Winner in the Neighborhood to Nation Recipe Contest, Spurlock wins $5,000 for himself, as well as $1,000 to share with a local charity. He has chosen the OneForest Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to environmental education and conservation.
Spurlock’s Red Hot Waffle with Buffalo Shrimp recipe is one of two Northeast Region Winners in the Neighborhood to Nation Recipe Contest. Made with Gold Medal Complete Waffle Mix and a hefty dose of buffalo sauce paired with Yoplait Nonfat Plain Yogurt and blue cheese sauce, the sandwich features a fiery-hot waffle wrapped around crispy battered shrimp
Spurlock is also in the running for the Grand Prize (to be announced in late August). One of 10 regional winners will be named the Grand Prize Recipe winner and receive a total of $10,000 in cash and $2,000 for charity as well as a three-day trip for two to the Food Network & Cooking Channel New York City Wine & Food Festival this October, the premier food and wine event celebrating America’s favorite foods. Additionally, Spurlock can win an additional $1,000 for his charity when the contest opens up a social voting element on Facebook August 12 -16.
In the meantime, the local community is invited to visit JD’s Pub & Grille to celebrate the award at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19. Representatives from General Mills will visit the restaurant to showcase the pub and celebrate Spurlock’s award-winning recipe. Guests will be treated to samples of his recipe and Spurlock will be presented with an oversized check. Spurlock will also present a check to the OneForest Foundation.
