An upgrade is on the way. This is not your father’s Cuba Libre. While some may argue that there is no need to mess with perfection, official plans to upgrade the space were announced last month, and include the addition of a wood-burning grill along with a chef’s table containing 10 seats, designed to create an interactive dining experience.
The Latin flavors extend to the dance floor. Cuba Libre’s theme is old Havana, and while many themed spots stop at the cuisine, Cuba Libre boasts one of the most active nightlife spots for Latin Dancing in all of Atlantic City. Every Friday and Saturday night from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. patrons pack the floor as the DJ rolls out all flavors of Latin beats.
It’s all about the mixed drinks. The bar here refers to itself as a “rum bar,” and in truth it does have an impressive selection of rums. But if mojitos and daiquiris are not your thing, fear not, as all forms of shaken, stirred and blended beverages are on the menu at Cuba Libre. In the mood for something new? Try the Pisco Sour — a mix of Macchu Pisco (a South American brandy-like liquor), orange juice, lime juice, egg whites and sugar.
Weekdays are the time to save. The happy hour deals at Cuba Libre are notable as they occur 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and include a nice variety of house-made cocktails for $5 along with $4 house wines and sangrias and a rotating cast of $3.50 beers. Hungry? They’ve got you covered there as well with an impressive list of Latin munchies with everything from yucca fries to Malanga fritters, all for $5 each.
Cuban food is more than just pressed sandwiches. While the pressed, pickle-laden Cuban sandwiches we all know and love are indeed delicious, Cuba Libre’s menu packs in a far more vast landscape of dishes from our southern neighbor, from empanadas and ceviches to a long list of tapas and traditional Cuban entrees up for grabs. Try one, and live a little.
