The inaugural Jim Whelan Open Water Festival will be held 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 14, at the Atlantic City High School Boathouse. The Festival, will honor the late Jim Whelan, who was a long distance swimmer and an advocate for teaching inner city children in coastal regions to swim. The swimming events planned for the Open Water Festival include a 400 meter, a 2K and the main event — a return of the Around The Island Marathon, a grueling 22.75 mile swim around Absecon Island that began in 1953 and has not been held since 2006. The event will raise funds for Whelan’s Whales, which was formed in 2017 by the Brigantine Aquatic Club after Whelan passed away. Whelan’s Whales offers swim lessons and water safety training at no cost for the children of Atlantic City.

The Atlantic City High School Boathouse is located at 3401 Fairmount Ave. in Atlantic City. For more info go to GreenWhales.org.
