There are political uprisings, and then there are the apolitical uprisings. The Rockabilly Uprising in Smithville falls under the latter. Rockabilly, as described by Urban Dictionary, is a type of music that combines elements of old-school rock with country, or belonging to the genre of early blues-infused rock of the ’50s. Here are five reasons the Rockabilly Uprising needs to be on your list of things to do this Saturday.
The music. Obviously. While the day is as much about the culture as the music, it wouldn’t be a Rockabilly Uprising without some good old-fashioned rockabilly music. Celebrate all-things rockabilly with tunes from Dr. Void & The Death Machines, a psycho-billy band from Red Bank; and Crash Gordon & Debra Dynamite, specializing in Rockabilly, early rock ‘n’ roll and R&B.
The special guests. If the music isn’t enough to get you there, swing by to meet Mark Moran and Mark Scuerman from Weird NJ Magazine, the guide to the local legends and best-kept secrets of New Jersey. The duo will sign autographs on the Greene.
The contests. Want to win some cold, hard cash? Create your very best pinup outfit and join in the Pin-Up Contest to win a $100 cash prize. Entry is free and you can register at Underground, the store behind the Rockabilly Uprising. Located at 615 E. Moss Mill Road in Smithville. Go to Rockabilly Uprising 2019 on Facebook for more information.
The goods. While there will be plenty of vendors on hand at the Rockabilly Uprising, the event takes place in the middle of Historic Smithville’s Village Greene. With over 50 specialty shops, there is something for every kind of shopper in Smithville.
The post-party. The Rockabilly Uprising ends at 5 p.m. Afterwards, be sure to head to Fred & Ethel’s Lantern Light Restaurant & Tavern for a Pucker Up Margarita made with tequila, watermelon pucker, sour mix, and cranberry juice; lots of craft beer; and live music.
